In my way-too-early preparation, I'm already thinking ahead on what I'm going to be eating while at BGG.Con. I have some ideas and from what I have been reading in other threads, here's what I know so far:

Known Food:

Westin's Restaurants and Lounges
- how good and how pricy are they?
Denny's
- across the street, it's Denny's, no real explanation needed

Possible Food:

Pizza Inn
- across the street, but looks like a gas station to me on google maps
Delivery
- From...?

I'm also thinking that if there are things in the room, like a microwave, hot water, etc, I could bring food like instant oatmeal, soup in cups, and so on.

So can the veteran convention goers and locals help flush out this picture? I think it would be helpful to have a resource for those of us who will be coming in and may not know the local options. I mean, if there's a really cool restaurant and all the locals know about it, if I knew about it I would probably be interested in grabbing a cab with a bunch of my new best friends and check it out.

So please, tell me what you know to help us con goers and our gastronomic futures!

If I may add on, are there any bars/pubs close by? I'm assuming there is a hotel bar.

There are several fantastic restaurants 1 mile in either direction - however they do require a car to get there.

Some of my faves are Taco Diner & Razoo's. If you like Mediterranean, then you will like Ali Baba's.

I put together a dining guide last year, but it wasn't as polished as I would have liked. I plan on having it updated in time for this year's con. There are approximately 30 restaurants in a tightly-knit area a couple of miles west of the hotel.

There are several other threads about dining at BGG Con, but always
room for another.

About 2-3 miles away is Grapevine with a lot of good choices.

About a mile north and a mile east is I-635 and Belt Line. Lots
of chain and non-chain restaurants there, and at
I-635 and MacArthur (another mile further east). A very good
Mexican place there (Seven Salsa's).
A contender for best (New York style) pizza of Dallas is
Cavalli Pizza 3601 Regent Blvd and Belt Line.

MacArthur Blvd is full of restaurants.

A little further away is Southlake.
Home to a lot of new, prized restaurants.

Don't go home hungry.

Razoo's was prety fantastic... A mountain of meat I couldn't see the other side of the table over and a 4 foot straw leading to a fishbowl of booz.

Yes!

-Got any of those pics Aldie?

The "Pizza Inn" is part of the gas station convenience store. They sell personal 4-slice pizzas with a few different topping varieties. The quality is about what you'd expect getting pizza from a gas station convenience store.

I figured it might be time for an update anyway, as restaurants tend to come and go, and quality may not be the same from year to year.

Since most of us won't have a car, it's probably good to know if any of the restaurants in those areas deliver and if not, which ones are worth the cab fare. Any "don't miss" suggestions? Seven Salsa's and Cavalli look pretty good actually.

Seven Salsas IS pretty good and there are no restaurants worth the cab fare, especially since there will be tons of people with cars that are willing to ferry people around. I personally make it a point to save at least one BGGer from a full weekend of Denny's h3ll. I love it when people overhear where we are going and ask to come along! As long as we have room, lets go! I know of at least a couple non-Texan's that are greatful for breakfast burritos and fried okra!

A word of warning - DO NOT EAT AT THE DENNY'S!

I ignored the warning last year thinking that it couldn't be THAT bad and that it would be great for a late night snack. I was reminded of my mistake the next morning with indigestion.
I don't know what it is, I eat at Denny's occasionally here at home, but THAT Denny's does SOMETHING to it's food that consistently gives people indigestion. Avoid it at all costs!

Wow, that is good to know. I had been thinking the same think. Ya, it's Denny's, but once in a while is no big deal, right? Guess I'll keep a few extra quid, er, dollars in my pocket to eat at the hotel and keep my ears out for people heading out and about.

I'll second this. I ate at Denny's two or three times last year, and didn't have any problems.

By the way, I can't recommend the hotel restaurant at the Westin. They are very pricey, have poor service, and the food isn't that good.

We went to a pizza place southeast (a ways) from the hotel in 2007, but we couldn't find it in 2008. Anyone have an idea what it was? It was in a L-shaped strip mall, "italian" owner, eating area and a lot of delivery.

I should have written down the name, though perhaps we will try the other place this year.

Watch if you buy the hotel pizza! It cost us about twice the listed price with tax, "delivery" and a courtesy fee (or something like that). I like the pizza, though it was small, but the price was much larger than the price sheet claimed!

Found these threads about local listed on another thread

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/310320

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/article/1645641

The top one is from 2008 and the bottom one from 2007, so I'm sure they're pretty out of date, but some of the advice still makes sense (except maybe the suggestion to eat nutter-butters and haagen daz for meals...).

I heard that there was no delivery charge if you picked it up in the lobby

The Hard 8 BBQ is a close drive, and awesome.

Basically, you walk up to this massive fire pit flame-y bbq racks everywhere area, and there's about 2000 pounds of meat in front of you. You say "give me some wings" and he plunks a pound or two down. "And some steak" and a few more pounds goes down. "And some of those sausages look good" Bam. And some... And some...

Then you say you're done, and he plunks the entire thing down on the scale, and tells you the damage.

Then you go inside, and sit at a rough picnic table area. Napkin? Hah, there's a roll of paper towels, tear off a chunk. Plates? No need, eat off the wax paper and the tray. Beans? Load up and as many as you want free.

It's roughing it, but great. And you'll walk out stuffed to the gills, and you'll have bought way more food than you can eat.

I had the opposite feeling... I was fine with meals at the hotel restaurant... Denny's sucks... luckily I only ate their once last year, but the year before I went there a few times... ugh!! gulp

Heh. maybe it was you guys that told us about it.

Last year some folks came into the game rooms exclaiming "I've just had the best BBQ of my life!", and so we just had to try it.
