Didnt think you`d miss the significance of the date!. That means loads of beach based scenarios then?????

Hi Sean.
No, the significance of the date hadn't escaped me. Quite appropriate that we have our annual Memoir tourney on the 65th anniversary of that momentus undertaking. How thoughtful of the Expo organisers to time it perfectly JUST for my tournament event [a-hem, wink] .
Will there be lots of beach action? - probably not, actually.
I'll be following my familiar format for the tournament with players split into two groups, one side the Allies and the other the Axis. All particpants will play a different opponent during the preliminary rounds (variety being the spice of life!) with the best Allied Player then squaring off against the best Axis Player in the final rounds. All other players thus ranked and matched against their counterpart in the opposing camp.
As you know, the beauty of this system is that we do not have to rely on well balanced scenarios to ensure a level playing field for those taking part, since the players are ranked according to their respective performance against other members in the same camp. So, for example, if I lose all the preliminary rounds as the Allied player but lose less heavily than every other Allied player, I would be ranked top player in the Allied Camp (all will become clearer once I list out the planned schedule - details to follow).
Thus, as well as a variety of opponents, I also plan to give a variety of scenarios for the particpants to squabble over.
There will of course be at least one D-Day beach scenario, how could there not be considering the date but I also want to give players the opportunity to test their skills using some of the expansion packs available. I there plan to have at least one Eastern front, Terrain Pack, Pacific theatre and Air Pack scenario on the event's schedule.

If I sign-up does that mean my whole day between 10 and 6 will be commited to this, or will there be time to look at exhibts, etc. ?

Hi
Is it necessary to own a copy of this game to play in the tourney or are sets provided?
Thanks

Good question. And one that prompts me to post the next blurb for the planned event. It may not be crystal clear from what follows (below) but I can assure you that there will be ample time in between rounds to take full advantage of the whole Expo experience. When the organisers first approached me with the idea of running some tournaments at the Expo I discussed how my involvement would need to allow participants (and me!) to be able to enjoy everything else going on at the Expo. Hence I view these as events rather than tournaments. I have a format that allows you to play as many rounds as you are comfortable and allow 'drop-in' players to make up any shortfall in numbers should that be necessary. Thankfully, as yet, I've never had to make use of this because the players always seem to get so involved with the event, enjoy the competition and friendly gaming atmosphere, and find the time to drift away in between rounds to wander around the Expo and try some of its other treats. We also schedule a fairly liberal lunch break part way through the day.
The number of rounds will ultimately be decided by the total number of entrants but a maximum of 12 players will see you play a total of 8 head-to-head games, if you want to play through the whole event.
Hope this answers your question.

You do not have to own the game to be able to participate. You don't even had to have played before. We welcome players of ALL experience levels ranging from someone with just a passing interest, keen to try the game maybe even for the first time, to those eager to pit their skills against new opponents of a similar skill set.
Last year we had our first novice player - having never played the game, and he thoroughly enjoyed the day often beating players with a lot more experience. That's part of the game's great appeal to me. How the simple game-play mechanics allied to the luck of the cards and dice can prove a great leveler of age and experience.
I tend to write directly to all participants a couple of weeks before the event to gauge their own level of experience so that I can pair similarly experienced players in the first round. I find this helps the novice/less experienced players to build a little familiarity with the game before tackling the more advanced players. I also use this direct contact to assess whether players can bring a copy of their own game-set should I require extra sets. We often have more than we need so owning a set isn't a pre-requisite for entrance.
Hope that answers your question.

Ok - more of the blurb...
I will be hosting a Days of Wonder Event at the UK Games Expo in Birmingham, a 1 day Memoir'44 Tournament for up to 12 players.
First and foremost the objective of this tournament is for everyone to have FUN.
Players of ALL experience levels will be very welcome. Ranging from someone with just a passing interest, keen to try the game maybe even for the first time, to those eager to pit their skills against new opponents of a similar skill set.
Guidance / instruction will be provided for new players and first round match pairings will be based on playing experience.
Players will be divided into two groups. One to fight as the Allies during the preliminary stages with the other group playing as the Axis. Each player will be ranked within their group depending on their won/loss record. The top ranked Allied player will match against the top ranked Axis player in the final with the lower ranks similarly matched to determine final placings.
A full compliment of 12 players* will result in 6 preliminary rounds with a further 2 round, head-to-head final match playing the same scenario from both sides (to remove any potential scenario unbalance)
A nice feature of this preliminary format is that it does not require the scenarios played to be balanced, as each player is 'competing' (i.e. ranked) against the other members of their group, not the actual opponents played.
*More players may be accommodated depending on level of interest and notice provided by early registration (book early if possible)
Rule Clarifications: Standard Memoir'44 (Basic) + Expansion Game rules. OUT OF THE BOX - plus those designated as Special Scenario Rules.
Scenarios: We will be venturing out across the fields of Europe, into the steppes of mother Russia, across the sands of Africa and into the jungles of the Pacific - so bring some suitable clothing ;o)
Details of the scenarios to be played will be posted nearer the event date.
Players may take part in some or all of the separate parts of the Days of Wonder Tournament, playing in part or all of the rounds as best suits their needs on the day.
Winner's Prize: The Memoir '44 Championship Winner will receive a £25 voucher to be spent at the Expo to go with their handsome trophy.
Fee: Sat £4.00

Some shots and ‘stuff’ from last year...
Players arriving on the day after registering are directed via posters to the battle room...
Each player receives their own Axis or Allied Player Sheet to record their scores for each round...
Players take their allotted spaces at the tables and battles commence...
Some serious card scrutiny ensues...
Cards hit the table and action kicks off...
Tough decisions lie at every turn...
…but the best make it look so easy...

Great tournament yesterday guys, really enjoyed it. Good to meet you all and thanks for the patience of answering all of our questions.
Be back next year, hopefully without so many rookie mistakes....
Even persuaded the wife to play our first game of newly purchased M44 this morning, which of course I deliberately lost as the gentleman that I am (cough, cough)

Thank you (and Jake) for trusting me that you would be able to fully particpate and enjoy the event even though you'd never played the game before. I guess the true testimony to how much you did enjoy the games was the fact that you had your newly acquired copy of the base game in your goodies bag as you left the Expo for the day. Welcome to the Memoir gaming fraternity!
I appreciate the effort you both made to not only attend but to also commit your day to the event. I do hope you still managed to fully enjoy the whole Expo experience as well as playing the tournament. A thoroughly enjoyable experience for all players. I believe we are very fortunate in that we always seem to attract a very friendly bunch of players and all games are played in the best possible spirit with help and advice offered with players pointing out alternative tactics and choices, often to the detriment of their own position. I like the fact that total newbies can sit down to play a game of Memoir (and C&C:Ancients) against a veteran player with just as much chance of winning as any other - the cards and luck of the dice are a great leveller. That said, it is interesting to note that last year's Champion [Ian 'Bill' Roberts] successfully defended his Championship this year, beating John Bennett in a closely fought final game. Just goes to show the experience and sound tactics will often win out - even in this game.
Congrats to them and every other player for their effort in ensuring this was a competitive yet (very) friendly event.

Many players expressed interest in a possible 'follow-up' tournament day later this year.
With this in mind you may want to pencil in Sunday 27th September as a possible date for a full day's gaming at the gaming club in Wigston, Leicester.
I'm not organising the day but have been asked to GM a tournament of some sorts.
If we get enough interest we may consider running concurrent Memoir / C&C: Ancients competitions. There won't be enough time in the day to be able to play in both so players would have to commit to one or the other. Both will be run along the same sort of format as the Expo events.
Any interest?
I'll ask the organiser (Patrick) to post more details of venue, directions, travel details, parking etc as well as opening/closing and the cost. I believe there will be a (small) entrance fee to cover the cost of the venue and the food & drinks that will be provided.
More to follow. Please post here or contact me direct if you would like to register an interest in attending for general gaming (details to follow) or to play in either of my planned events.

Hi René.
Thanks for the question. Not sure how my subcription to this thread missed your post but I've only just noticed it - sorry for not getting back to you sooner.
The tournament schedule is shown below.
I always try to add in some variety to the scenarios and this year was no exception. It can be a bit of a dilemma at times, not wanting to introduce too many of the expansion rules for fear of alienating newer players whilst, on the other hand, I still wanted to provide a credible and interesting challenge for the more experienced players. I decided to favour the more experienced by chosing one each of the Eastern, Mediterranean and Pacific, and threw in the option of air rules in one of the scenarios for those wanting to try out these relatively new rules. The rest of the 5 preliminaries rounds were made up from 2 Western Front (base game) scenes, one of which just had to be a beach landing as homage to the date of the event (6th June). I decided we should further pay tribute to the historic day by using another of the beach assaults for the final round, with the plan to run this in Overlord format, time and space permitting. As it transpired, time was tight so we ended up running the one board version for the final head-to-head round.
Despite the wide variety of expansion rule-sets in use, we managed to cater for all the new players and they acquitted themselves well.

I need some idea of numbers to be able to run this in tournament format. If we don't get enough interest I'll run either an open gaming session for anyone wanting to play or maybe even some Overlord games using the official Memoir battlemats.
Thanks.
