It’s time to reprint Hammer of the Scots. The rules, blocks, cards, etc. will all remain the same. But let’s have a go at improving the mapboard!
In recognition of the fact that there are a lot of talented artists out there in game-land, Columbia Games is announcing a contest to give YOU a chance to do this job for them. Submit your vision of what the mapboard ought to look like to me (jctaylor2@cox.net) by July 31st and, if we pick your mapboard, you’ll receive ten free games of your choice from the Columbia Games catalogue plus artist’s credit for the mapboard that will be included in all future editions of this popular and award-winning game. The board will also be sold separately for those who wish to upgrade their existing game.
There are four caveats, however. First, if Columbia Games is not happy with any of the submissions (possible I suppose, but unlikely), it will not feel obliged to hand out games to any of the contestants. Second, you have complete access to the Columbia Games product line when choosing your ten games (should you win), but you cannot pick two or more copies of any one game. Third, submissions should be in PDF format (or something similar so as not to blow-up my inbox and hard drive storage capacity), but you must maintain a more robust file with multiple layers (say, base terrain for layer 1, areas for layer 2, cities, towns, and battle sites for layer 3, place names for layer 4, and so forth) to submit to Columbia Games should you win. Fourth, Columbia Games reserves the right to make modifications to any winning entry should it feel the need to do so.
I talked Columbia Games into this experiment given all of the wonderful artwork I’ve seen from our fan base, so don’t let me down! I look forward to seeing what you artistic wizards are able to produce … and look forward to a graphically improved product for sale before the year is out. Good luck!

Someone should get in touch with the guys that have submitted the awesome custom maps here on BGG.... Great idea Jerry.

Marvelous idea!
This suggestion is obvious enough that I doubt I need to make it, but just in case: should you get several high-quality submissions with very different virtues, you might consider making them available for separate purchase. Beauty, accuracy, and usability are sometimes in tension, and different players value them differently. Contrariwise, offering more than one map risks diluting the pool of possible purchasers to the point where none of the maps makes money, so I'll certainly understand if, in your greater understanding of the market, you don't take this suggestion.

what size will it be printed? will it be two or quad-folded?

Any change of getting fan art on the cards too?

Same size and quad-folded.
New label and card art is not necessary for a submissions, but consider it "extra credit" work. That is, if we were to go with a unique poetic looks (like that done by Mark M.) we should probably make some changes to the blocks and cards to make everything look stylistically consistent. Hence, the bigger the departure from the established look that the mapboard submission represents, the more "credit" you get for submitting new labels and card artwork.

not by me.

And y'all should just offer the deal straight to him. His complete redesign is gorgeous:

This is a great idea! And my copy desperately needs replacing. While you're at it, you should update the looks of the blocks to go with whatever final map design you go with.
Where do I send my money?

You are probably tired of hearing this but I do not like the generic card backs. I'm just used to seeing the name of the game in the card backs of everything I play... well except for traditional card games.
Other than that, build a nicer copy and I will come. My only Columbia game is Texas Glory.

This is awesome news. When do you expect the reprint to happen? I can't wait to get my hands on a copy.

I agree. Matt Harvey's design is simply brilliant. Columbia should get in touch with him asap.

Count me on that bandwagon. Matt's map is a beauty.

I find it bland. I do like the many colors of the current version and seeing the mountains, I hope the one that wins has colors too.

I think both of the ones r3gamer pasted look great, but share your preference for color. Humbly voting for blue over brown!

I saw this thread and I'm in process of submitting my entry after acquiring access to AICS again [ "rebuilt my PC" ]. Things I'm changing to my original:
1. Adding battle sites. 2. Moving several townships to across the borders to match Columbia design [ oops ]. 3. Fattening map contours in order to reduce blue "lake-ification" in many areas of the map.
I'll try for the "extra-credit" as well but I'm not sure if I have the time to finish it by the competition's end date. I like the card-backs as they are and the base source image is public domain. For the front card artwork, I'll need to remove the Hildebrandt images, the non-paid Churms art and essentially replace many of the images by finding either public-domain images or copying the latest HoTs art from the Columbia Games offering.

I hope many publisher start to make such contest and also search the bgg for talented artists because many of them are a lot better ,than many artist who are doing boardgame-illustration right now, because they are "in the hobby".

I second that! Actually, I've been holding off buying HotS, since I knew that I'd be feeling bad about not having as awesome a game as the one made up by f00k.
If Columbia does bring this to market, I'll pledge a copy right away. Hear, hear!

I like what you did with your map. I like how you incorporated the blocks to go with the map. Nice and colorful is how I like it. But then again... it is up to Columbia... isn't it...

Its 22x25, isnt it? It dang well better be, cause thats the size I'm using for my own version of the map! Hard to compete with whats already been done, but I certainly wont win if I dont try.

Re: Redesign
As someone who has never played Hammer of the Scots but would be interested in buying the game if it was redesigned here are my suggestions.
Remove the Wallace portrait art on the block, its poor. A simple crest symbol like on the other blocks would probably be best rather than a specific looking portrait. Also remove any other portraits on the blocks (not sure if there are others) and replace them with the crest/flag symbols. Original symbol designs for special blocks could be used if the point is to make certain blocks have a distinctive look.
Make the map colorful but at the same time subdued. Information should be able to be seen clearly on the map, and some terrain features like mountains and forest and lakes can enhance the map if done in a subtle manner.
Make the card art match the design sense of the new map and tiles.

That would be nice, but my understanding is that this is only a map re-design; the rest of the components stay as is.
