Contest is now
Make a Print And Play game, and win GeekGold!
Rules below. If you have any questions, comments or suggestions just point those out. You can also check the topic where we discussed rules.
1. Participate in two-person teams - game designer and graphic artist. It does not matter if they both do graphics, or both design, just it has to be "officially" team of game-designer and graphics-designer.
2. One person cannot be in more than one team.
3. Single person cannot participate (no matter how genius designer and/or graphic-artist that person is - has to find somebody to help.)
4. Each team can participate with only one game design. Contest time - 2 months. Teams can mention that they are participating, but can upload the games only in the last two weeks of competition (so there would be no forgery, or unfair competition). Rules/components changes and clarifications may be done during that last weeks.
5. Teams will have to provide game that will consist of: full color box design (top and sides, no bottom), A5 rulebook that will be attractive visually, full color components that will take no more place than 8 A4 pages (it has to respect printer margins), AND black-white low-ink variant of all graphics including rulebook and minimalist box cover.
6. All used graphics has to be legal (graphic designer has to has permission or use own graphics - not to rip off Google Images).
7. The game must use original components only. Entrants cannot use Carcassonne tiles or Decktet cards or Piecepack bits or those Icehouse things... Generic, common gaming pieces such as regular 6-sided dice, or buttons/counters/pawns are allowed though.
8. There is no size limit on the rules. If you need 120 pages to explain your game, go for it.
9. Your entry may use any mechanics and may be themed or abstract. It may be for any number of players (but due to the theme limitations only logical game is for 2 or more players). The game can have any number of turns, including no turns at all. The game should be a game not puzzles (game should be replay-able)
10. There are following limitations on theme:
10.1. Co-Operative game. Most likely in the game, where co-operative mechanics would not be an obvious solution (as someone said "unexpected cooperation" - it sums up the idea nicely)
10.2. Game involving at least two steel swords (That does not influence the theme) It's up to you what will that mean. Interpreatate it anyway you want. And again - to clarify - that does not mean "game about two swords". Two swords may be a critical piece of game, that you need to collect to win as well as hidden prank in "Where is Wally" manner.
11. The cards (or tiles) do not have to be all the same shape or size. Any two dimensional shapes are acceptable. The L Game is a good example; it has 2 L shaped pieces and 2 squares as its main components plus a simple board. (3D-"cut, fold and glue" pieces for the game are welcome though. As long as you will be able to fit it with other components of the game on no more that A4 8 pages, I don't consider "rulebook" a component)
12. If team is from different countries, they must insert rules in their national languages to the rulebook (as well as English rules). So If there would be team X-Y - X is from Hungary, Y is from Germany, then rulebook would be in English, German, and Hungarian.
13. Game has to be designed DURING the contest time. (no entries like "I designed this game month ago", also - no late entires)
14. Post your game to thread via link to downloads and explain how the game works or post the rules. Preferabely - add your game as a BGG game entry to the database.
15. The winner will be determined by a poll that I'll create after all the entries are in. I'll create the poll on a separate thread so it gets some front page time and add links (if possible) to each entry's post's page. The poll will be open for one week! (no ties... there will be another poll if two games will gain the same number of votes... Like in championships...)
16. If you entrants change your game based on other the input of other users, it will be up to you to credit your helpers or not. (Though as I mentioned there is that "last weeks" rule to avoid that)
17. Any tips given the contest thread will be added to the prize pool, with possibility of adding "third place prize". Also tips I've received when I first announced upcoming contest and consulted rules will be added to the prize pool. Also all Geek Gold collected thanks to moderation and Geek Modders will be added to the prize pool. The final prize will be announced on opening on the voting thread.
18. First prize: 30GG for designer, and 30GG for graphic designer. Second prize 10GG for designer and 10GG for artist. Those are guaranteed but not final prizes (look above).
19. Tips given to the VOTING thread will not be added to prize pool, so please don't tip it. If you insist on giving a tip to the voting thread, GG will be added to next contest I will organize. If I will fail to organize next contest, GG will be added to a contest (organized by someone else) that will be running at that time. There are contest organized from time to time.
20. I'm not eligible to win. I will not enter. I can vote.
21. Print and Play game design contest begins 28th of June at 0:00A.M. PST. I know it may seem to be stupid time, but where I live it will be 9:00A.M. Contest ends 30th of August at 3:00P.M. PST. (15:00 in 24h display) midnight of my timezone. First entries can be posted on 16th of August, no time specified here, just 16th of August. Then we will take some time off (decided on quantity of entries, but probably about one week) to playtest games. The voting will start one week after contest end (or more - depends). Voting time - one week. I will create voting poll in voting thread.
Big "Thank You" to Geek Modders who expanded this award during moderation.
