I contacted the people at Huch and Friends to inquire about an english edition. I got a nice reply from them saying it's in the works but it probably won't be available until Spring.

I thanked them and asked if the measurements will remain in Metric units. I'll post here if I get a response to my follow-up.

So if you can wait 9 months or so, our english version may be a reality!

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! for this GLORIOUS news! I thought our hopes were dashed when Fauna failed to take SdJ. Being Canadian, though, I think I'd actually prefer metric. Being Canadian Part Two, seeing as how I was born almost a dozen years before the government started introducing the metric system, I think I'd actually prefer the imperial system: Rule Britannia!

My question about the metric system was hopeful. I absolutely DO NOT want an edition in english units. If they release it in english without metric, I'll buy the german edition. I told them as much as well.

I don't know why I didn't think of this when I first posted, but.....
It's easy enough to print an English edition of this game with both metric and imperial measures in it. You see this all the time (at least in Canada!) with things like kids' collectable animal cards: there will be the measure in one system, and right beside it, in brackets, there will be the alternative one. That way, there's no way the two systems can be confused. Obviously, players would have to decide in advance which system they'd use in a given game. ("Alright, the actual weight of the pygmy gorilla is five kilograms, not eleven, as you guessed, Ned." "Kilograms?! I guessed in pounds! I win!")
This is becoming a very weighty discussion. But what else can you expect? Give somebody an inch, and they'll take a kilometre.

The problem with putting both on the cards is you'd have to put both on the board. With the way the ranges are, the translation would make no sense. 20-50 cm for instance becomes 7.87-19.70 inches. Too clunky to put on the board that way. If it's not on the board, there is no reason to have it on the cards.

They should just leave it Metric, IMO. Everything I've heard says after a round or two, it's a non-issue and we Americans really should get better with our Metric system (what with, you know, the entire rest of the world using it other than us, and everything).

Spring, huh? The question is, if one is already studying German, would it be quicker to actually learn German or just wait for the game . . .

Easy to handle this problem. Each player just needs a disc that they can flip that has metric on one side and imperial on the other. If, on a question, they're more comfortable switching, they could do so in mid game this way.

As easy as metric is, I might be playing the game with older family members who would be completely confused by it. I don't want to have to say, "Is anybody uncomfortable with the metric system here?" before starting a game.

Modified Example:
Jack: "Alright, the actual weight of the pygmy gorilla is five kilograms, not eleven, as you guessed, Ned."

Ned: "Kilograms?! I guessed in pounds! I win!"

Jack: "Well, that's too bad, Ned, because your disc is flipped to the metric side. I guess you forgot to flip it. You still lose!!"

Doesn't work, given the way you actually record your guesses. You put tokens down on a box indicating a range of answers. Ned wouldn't have said "11" in the first place, but some range that did not actually map to a single other range in metric.

They could make the board double sided, with metric units on one side and imperial on the other. The cards of course can contain both units. Then the same version can be sold anywhere, the only limitation being that all players have to use the same units.

It may be that separate versions is the better approach, perhaps a "Canadian" and "American" version or some-something. As for me, I prefer ounces, pounds, inches and feet.

I've found that a couple of simple approximate conversions are more than adequate:

2.5 cm = 1 In
1 Meter = 3 feet
1 kg = 2 pounds

The ranges are such that you almost never have to be anymore accurate than this...

Well, that'll be real useful to you metric-lovers once the American version comes out with proper measurements, as God intended.

;) ;)

You want the American version to use cubits?
