NorthStarGames: Bringing Gamers and Non-Gamers Together!
I can't wait for people to start reviewing it. I think the quality of questions is much better than in the base game. We've just learned a bit over the years about which types of questions people have more fun with. But until I hear other people say it, I'll remain cautiously optimistic.
When I heard the learn’d astronomer; When the proofs, the figures, were ranged in columns before me; When I was shown the charts and the diagrams, to add, divide, and measure them; When I, sitting, heard the astronomer, where he he lectured with
much applause in the lecture-room, How soon, unaccountable, I became tired and sick; Till rising and gliding out, I wander’d off by myself, In the mystical moist night-air, and from time to time, Look’d up in perfect silence at the stars. W.W.
An adapted form of this works great as an icebreaker/mixer at a large social gathering.
While everyone is chatting/socializing:
1) Quietly pull aside 6 or 7 volunteers, read them a question and have them each write down an answer in the right hand side space of a piece of paper that looks like this:
________ > VALUE >= _________
_____ POINTS
2) Sort the papers as usual for the game, then you fill in the left hand side with the adjacent value (creating a unique range for each piece of paper), Fill in the points based on the usual payoff, and return the papers to the original owners.
3) Direct the volunteers to spread themselves around the room, holding their paper up so that other people can see them.
4) Get everyone's attention, read the question out loud, and direct everyone to walk around the room, and find the answer range they agree with most. (Tell them to come stand by you if they think all of the ranges are too high.)
5) After everyone has settled on a choice, announce the real answer, and hand everyone in the winning group an appropriate number of point chips.
6) Take your next set of volunteers from the winning group, and pull them aside while everyone else continues to socialize. (Now everyone else is with a new group of people to chat with!)
7) The winner(s) are those who collect the most point chips by the end of the game.
Thanks for the tip about the game show! I will try this with my class from time to time and see how it plays out! So far, some people don't seem to care much for the game because of the betting mechanic, but the game show may be the answer to better game play!
