Announcing The 2009 Golden Geek Awards!
The Golden Geek Award is given annually to the best new games of the year, as selected by you, the users.
The "Geekies" will be given in the following categories:
- Best Gamers' Game - Best Family Game - Best Wargame - Best 2-player Game - Best Party Game - Best Children's Game - Best Card Game - Best Artwork/Presentation - Best Expansion (NEW CATEGORY) - Best Print & Play (NEW CATEGORY) - Most Innovative (NEW CATEGORY)
Here are the specifics:
In order to avoid voter fraud, we have adopted the following restrictions. Voting is restricted to either supporting users (having a supporter badge from any year is sufficient),voters who pay a one-time 20 GeekGold fee, or users who have purchased an avatar or a geekbadge.
Anyone caught stuffing the ballot box will have their votes removed and be suspended from the site.
There will be two steps to selecting the winners.
First, there will be a nomination phase. Each eligible voter can nominate up to 15 games in each of the categories. The 15 games with the most nominations in each category will become the nominees for the final voting. You are not restricted to the list of suggested nominees - feel free to write-in a game by entering its gameid number directly. Previous winners are not eligible for nomination.
The nomination page is here: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geekawards
The final voting will be resolved using a condorcet voting system - specifically the Schulze method. You can read more about it here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schulze_method
For those who don't want to read the specifics of the system, users will rank the games in each category from 1 to 15, (with a 0 for no opinion), and, through some mathemagical computations, we will select the winner.
The nomination phase will run until 9/30 and the final voting for one more month (10/31). The winners will be announced at BoardGameGeek.CON 2009 in November - www.boardgamegeek.com/bggcon
You are welcome to campaign, discuss voting and nominations, etc, as much as you like. Let the awards begin!

As far as I understand the order of the nominations (1.2.3. etc) doesn't make a difference, right? (I just can't change their order.)

Does '2-player' mean games that can be played only 2-player or that are great when played 2-player?

It doesn't matter - in fact I removed the numbers to avoid confusion.

Typically they have been strictly 2 player games, but we're open to interpretation.

Man, the list has quite effectively reminded me of how bad the last year really was for new games. A shame, really.

How do I search my ratings for games from a specific year?
Which games are eligible, and how do games end up on the list on the nomination page?
Lots of stuff seems to be missing from the list again, for example, Dominion: Intrigue, Race for the Galaxy: Rebel vs Imperium, and three of the Kinderspiel des Jahres nominees. If stuff like this gets nominated, is it automatically included in the list?

For all the usual "Game mechanics are just being recycled and nothing is fresh any more/the end is nigh" discussions that we usually have at the end/beginning of a year, I really think there were a lot of high quality games released! I am very impressed - some really top notch games (at least in my opinion).
Cheers,
Giles.

Erm, is there a way to withdraw nominations? My memory of previous years is that there was?
My theory was that if I reached the limit and wanted to add more I could remove the least deserving potential nominee. Since that didn't seem to work I've ended up with an alphabetical imbalance!
Please help; Snow Tails and Steel Driver deserve better.

In the future please include a link from geekdo.com as well. This would save a step for those of us who are browsing with geekdo. (For the others like me, the link is http://boardgame.geekdo.com/geekawards)

Just click the little red circle next to the nominated game that you want to remove.

And here's the first nomination for the category "BGG members that moan about how everything used to be much better before" that always show up yearly in these lists...

I cannot add a game. I'm trying to add Consensus and Identik (one of these is a 2008 release and doesn't even show in the main list). I click the "search" option and type in part of the name, just like I did to find the names in this post, but when I click on the game's name, nothing happens. The link doesn't dissappear and it doesn't do anything. I eventually have to click on the grey X in a circle next to the search box to stop trying to add a much needed game to nominate for party game and game of the year.

How about a Solitaire category for next year? I think games that include rules for or are designed as solitaire games is something that could really use recognition...

Woo! I'm nominated! I am a contender!!!!!
To be fair though, this is the first year I have felt that way. Last year there were a bunch of games that I thought were great: Agricola, Brass, Race For the Galaxy, Wabash Cannonball/Chicago Express, Container, and Warriors of God.
This year I have Le Havre, Automobile (maybe), and a handful of expansions that I am really digging.
So for me this year has been a big step down from last year.
