As it is nicer to have a map to see where the different hotels are and where everybody is staying, I have created a 'communitywalk' map for Essen that lists many of the hotels, post offices, ticket outlets, etc.:
http://www.communitywalk.com/essen2011
old maps:
2010 - http://www.communitywalk.com/essen2010 2009 - http://www.communitywalk.com/essen2009 2008 - http://www.communitywalk.com/essen2008
The idea is, that people can add themselves to the description of a hotel so that it is easier to see at a glance 'who is staying where for how long'.
Suggested format for adding yourself to a hotel description is:
bgg_id __ arrival_date - departure_date
example: moschen __ 22.10 - 25.10
If you like, you can also put information about where and when you or your group will be playing games.
To be able to change the hotel description, add new locations, etc. you have to login using:
user=boardgamegeek password=boardgamegeek
A small note: As the web site seems to have some problems with displaying the german special characters (ä,ü,ö,ß), I have changed them to (ae,ue,oe,ss). Please keep this in mind, when searching for street names, hotel names, etc.
Cheers, Mo
Edit: Created map for 2011

Hi Moshen, great idea. I added myself to the Ibis. Bit confused thought because there seem to be two Ibis in Hollestrasse No. 61 and No. 35. both have the same address.

Top work Mo.
You have the Ypsilon twice, no 5 and no 6.

Re: Hotel, public transport and convention center map for Essen 2009
Glad you like it
The duplicates happened because I uploaded quite a lot of additional hotels that were kindly provided to me by "EYE of NiGHT" (Thanks!!). I tried to remove all duplicates beforehand, but it seems that I have missed some.

Ok, I have removed the duplicate.

Ok, I have removed the duplicate.
I also received a comment, that the Fantasy Encounter game shop will be closed during the show. I double checked with the shop owner and he confirmed this. I think I will leave the location in the map anyway, as there might be people that come a few days earlier to Essen or stay a few days longer. And it's always good to know where the nearest game shop is

Added myself to the Moevenpick. I've finished all my other pre-Essen social/trip planning and am fully into Essen planning, so I'm getting excited!!

Small update: I have added all the users from the "Playing games out of hours in Essen? List your hotel/location here" (http://geekdo.com/thread/426194) to the map. I also added the local "Toys'R Us" game shop...just in case you are not happy with the collection at the exhibition

An excellent idea, I've added the NH Hotel Oberhausen which is where I'm staying. It's a little way away from the exhibition hall but we're driving and it seemed the best available deal I could get.
Hopefully some other people are staying nearby to play games with!

Me and my friends are staying at Kolpinghaus Essen-Frohnhausen located on Frankfurter Str. 3, it appears to be a hostel but apparently there will be a lot of gamers staying there.

Grand idea... It helped me to find many possible hotels to stay while attending Spiel '09. Thanks a lot

I just added the Jugendherberge Duisburg Wendau (Youth Hostel) wher I will stay. It is quite far away (22 Min to Essen Hbf with the S-Bahn + 5-10 Min to walk to the station), but it´s by far the chaepest i could find in the region. Single room incl. breakfast 28,60 Euro / night

Re: Hotel, public transport and convention center map for Essen 2009
Shouldn't the Atlantic Congress Hotel also be on the list?
If I understand correctly, it's right next to the messe, and while it's pretty pricey, it looks like it's barely more expensive than the Holiday Inn Express. Although the room I'm looking at is at an extreme discount. Is that common or rare? Will I be the only gamer staying there? I could go to the Bredeney, but that will actually be more expensive if I manage to find a room mate for Atlantic Congress.

First Time Essentendee. I'm staying at the Atlantic Congress simply because it was simple. It does seem a fair bit more pricey, but I won't have to worry about trains etc. I presume that next year I'll be more informed/organised and stay somewhere less expensive. So, you won't be the ONLY gamer there!

Re: Hotel, public transport and convention center map for Essen 2009
I noticed the downside to the Atlantic Congress Hotel: breakfast is not included, and costs a whopping 22 euros per person, per day. I think I'll be bringing my own breakfast.

You should easily find a nice bakery/cafe on Rüttenscheider Strasse.

The hotel is at the northeast corner of the Grugahalle - not in the satelitepicture to be seen as is it just new opened, last december.

Re: Hotel, public transport and convention center map for Essen 2009
A little more south on Rüttenscheider you will find:
At the corner Rüttenscheider - Josef Lene Str. a " Netto" here you can buy mineral water, cookies and all other stuff to eat.
At the corner of Rüttenscheider - Florastr., 2 other baker and an "EDEKA" where you can buy fresh sausages, chees and all the goodies you love to eat.
Just short before this corner is Essens second best ice palor.- "Mörchen"
All only a 5 minute walk from the Messe.

Joscha - I disagree! Mörchen is the BEST ice cream parlor in the city! You can get a scoop of Eis for about 0,70 Euro. It's the best food deal in the city... (Though if your offer is still good, you'll have to show me the other ice cream parlor during the week)
