I've made a card game for a game development competition based on Valve Software's zombie survival FPS Left 4 Dead.
It's a co-op survival game kinda like Munchkin where each player takes a card facedown from the deck and they all flip their cards simultaneously to uncover: zombies, specials, events and items. Players can help each other defeat monsters and there a set of "Last Stand" cards to revive players who've been killed. My card game also simulates the Finale by drawing from the discard pile face up and players must clear any active zombies or specials.
Although I still need to add some polish my game won 1st place in the game development competition.
Players can also adjust the difficulty of the game by drawing more cards at the beginning of each round. Cards are drawn face down so that you "don't know what's around the next corner" but the number of face down cards in front of you should make you nervous.

This is still a work in progress. Originally I made the cards using Magic Workstation but I'm working on my own layout which you can see here as well as placeholder cards like Tannhausers for the players and one for the decks of cards.

Nice looking cards, rare co-operative game.
Reminds of the boardgame Pandemic. Perhaps you can get some inspiration from there.
One idea I have is to have a competitive variant, where 1 group of players play as Zombies, while the other as Humans.
I wonder if the L4D pictures are used without copyright issues, because I have thought of using computer game capture screenshots for my game but worry about copyright issues.

I love L4D. In fact I just got through playing the new DLC "Crash Course" campaign they just released yesterday.

Nice. I'm expecting an official L4D boardgame to be published by FFG any minute!:D
Hmm, at least the 'zombies' can't run in a card game! ;)

Nice idea. I still have to test the game but I want to wait for the card design remake since the preview is promising.

I have actually emailed Valve but received no reply, however I think this can safely be classified as a fan-mod and since 1) Valve has released the SDK for their game for people to mod and play with and 2) I'm not making money from the game, I'll continue until I receive some sort of cease & desist.
I'll definitely check out Pandemic and while I haven't previously thought about a competitive variant, I'll definitely give it some thought.

Very nice!
Can I suggest that you spend some time thinking about the different characters. In my opinion, the video games do NOT really make enough use of that. Do you really do anything different with the characters? I never felt it in the 1st one (have not played the 2nd one yet, did they fix it?). For example, they could have made one of the characters a lot stronger, one a lot faster, one (and ONLY one) able to use med packs to heal. I never felt that I gained or lost anything by playing one of the characters, it was the same for all. Sure, you kept as a team and covered each other, but it could have been so much better if you had strategies based on which of the 4 you played, and could "feel" the difference in your players speed, health, skills, weapon use, accuracy etc.

We need a L4D2 version now.

Hello everyone. I discovered this card game a few month ago and I think it's an excellent idea. By playing it with my brother we found many ideas to enhance it. We created new cards with more different events, we changed existent ones (like specials) to be closer to the original game. The cards are taken from L4D 1 & 2. We didn't took every items or events of the two games but we tried to have enough card to vary situations in game. We kept the rules but I rewrite them to make them more clear and even create rules for scavenge mode.
All the text of the planned cards are written except the quotes (I'll have to listen to all the sound files to find the good ones). The game is still in progress so we don't know if all the cards can be useful but we are going to do some tests, especially online with Vassal when all the cards will be ready. I uploaded here the card list if you want to see what cards there'll be in the game. The rules used to play are barely the same as Fengol's so if there are some cards which need explanations or aren't clear you can tell me here.I also need to find quotes extract from the game to illustrate some cards like Fengol did. Because I'm french, I don't know what are these quotes in english and which one can be interesting for the cards so if you have ideas by playing the games you can suggest here.
I'm currently taking screenshots for a few last cards but I think we could make it available by the end of this summer. My brother designed a card layout for the game so here are some pictures of the cards. What do you think about it ? Do you have any remarks on this new version ?
P.S: Note that this game will be available under creative common license and that Fengol know about it because I already presented this on gamedev.net. Edit: I don't know how to align images here so sorry for the long post due to images.

I'm also making a L4D game & I found that the L4D wiki is great source of quotes. http://left4dead.wikia.com/wiki/Bill/Quotes_and_Captions Hope this cuts back the work you need to do.
On a related note, your cards are great! It's very much the look I'm trying (and currently failing) to go for. What did you use to make the graphics for them?

Have you spoken with Valve about the rights for their art?

I knew this excellent wiki (I used it many times) but never found these quotes before. That's exactly what I was looking for. Thanks !
Concerning the graphics, I played the game to find good and varied textured wall and my brother who designed the card layout just select and colored textures to fit with the type of card.

It's only a tribute to the Valve videogame but can never replace the videogame itself. With all the website, fanfilm and other fan projects about the game I don't think it can bother Valve but if one day they ask me to stop doing it I'll sure do it.

Sounds reasonable Valve generally are pretty forthcoming, and screenshots like the ones you use for the card graphics aren't strictly their art anyway. I'd mostly be concerned about the card backs, they (and the professional look of the cards) certainly make it look like an official product though, which isn't necessarily good. Maybe a disclaimer of sorts on the cards themselves like the one you have will do the trick already? No clue.
Anyway, as a fan of L4D, and of PnP games, I really like what you're doing here

Yes on a few cards there is little lines of disclaimer to explain it. I'm not totally sure about the text I should use right now and where to put it on the cards but there will be definitively something on each card to prevent rights problems. Maybe on the back to avoid confusion even if the cards look like official work. Note that the card back image is extracted from the Left 4 Dead fankit distributed by Valve for the fan to do websites.

There are the standard phrases about not claiming the copyrighted L4D artwork and trademarks (I imagine they have registered trademarks) as your own, and stating who the rightful owner of those are. You'll find these notices at the bottom of most fan sites.
