Wow! I have just received a letter from the "you-know-what-company"! Enjoy!
QUOTE
Dear valued customer,
We thank you for your recent purchase of our new boardgame Space Hulk.
Following the recent change in the IP regulations in the United States we draw your attention to the fact that you are only authorised to use the Space Marines and Genestealer miniatures supplied with the above-mentioned game exclusively for playing Space Hulk Rules version 3.0 equally supplied with the above game.
You are explicitely prohibited to use the above-mentioned figurines for playing any previous rules versions of Space Hulk (occasionally referred to as Space Hulk 1.0 and Space Hulk 2.0). You are explicitely not authorised to use them for playing any other miniature rulesets having been produced, currently being produced, or likely to be produced in the future by any manufacturers other than Games Workshop. Likewise, you are explicitely forbidden to use any Games Workshop miniatures to play any miniatures rulesets other than those produced or to be produced by Games Workshop.
We would kindly suggest that you consider this letter as a broad "Cease and Desist" order. To avoid any possible infringement on your part we suggest that you get rid of any rulsets and miniatures other than those of Games Workshop you may have in your esteemed posession. We would apprecaite receiving a formal evidence of the above (e.g. pictures of your delivering them to your local wastebin). Should you fail to comply within 24 hours, we will start legal proceedings against you in the country of your legal residence or - should it not be United States or United Kingdom - in any other country of our choice.
Looking forward to providing you with countless hours of entertainment in the future.
Yours only (from now on)
Games Workshop

I just had an eerily surreal experience.
Clicked on "reply" and it took me to a screen that said: "Article does not exist."
I tried it a second time and got the normal "subject/reply" box.
Weird.
Re the "letter," I finally realized it was satirical when I hit the word "esteemed."
GW would never use that word in reference to consumers.

This letter sounds like a bad joke to me...
Even a proper scan would be no real evidence in times of modern computers (you know what)....
BUT: if it IS real, this is certainly one of the most ridiculous letters of all time!

That was me. I completely failed in my attempt to spot the sarcasm in the letter and had posted something that only could be described as 'FAIL'.

GW would never use that word in reference to consumers. What tipped me off was that it wasn't signed "Yours faithfully" like the real ones I've been seeing on other sites.

Seems the folks at GW have decided to cut off their nose to spite their face, as it were, and go to war with their fanbase by sending out Cease and Desist notices to fansites to take down any and all GW related worksheets, player aids , rule sets, etc.
In another list it is mentioned that BBG also got one of these and took everything down.
Im all for brand protection and all, but to do this is just suicidal. Yet another company that thinks it can piss on their customers and tell them its raining without any consequences.
Oh well, no GW for me.

I'd let them go ahead with legal procedings without providing pictures of throwing them away. If it is in the U.S. the FBI would have to be involved and if they come and search and they aren't there, they'd have to have evidence. On the other hand you probably could have that letter investigated to see if it is real. I only wonder how they know you have them, especially that letter does seem a bit phisy. There have been fake supeanoas in around before. Some people use real companies. I'll give you and example. In the U.S. there is a series of E-mails that claim they are from the FBI and they are false but stating that the person owes $1,000's of dollars in restituions.
I'm also not aware that the IP (Intelecutall Property) rights (Copyright laws) in the U.S. have changed. I don't know where other laws might apply from. I check on this all the time here.
Plus accourding to the legal part of the website they are protected by trademark which is somewhat different than copyright.
You might want to contact them and check to see if it is a real letter. Could be a forgery. Basically someone getting ahold (or getting a letter themselves) could of sent it.
Also, you might of been told you'd be extradited into the country of origin and they'd have to have an extradictment agreement (to my understanding) and that would have to have a court date by itself to happen.
