I don't have the rules in front of me, but if I remember correctly, group combat is initiated when I attack an opposing character, and another opposing character is in a position to attack me. This then potentially triggers a chain reaction, sucking several characters (friendly & opposing) into the combat.

But what about the case where I attack an opposing character, there is no other opposing character is in a position to attack me, but another friendly character is in a position to attack my target? Does this trigger group combat?

It seems a little weird if not - it's then quite alot harder to force a group combat. But (unless I'm missing something, which hopefully I am), the rules don't seem to mention this scenario...

Short answear: Yes group combat triggers both ways

If combat is initiated between yellow and blue player (yellow attacks blue), any blue character adjacent to the attacker must join combat, and any yellow character adjacent to the defender must join combat. If any character joins combat this way, check the above statement again, this time against any character now involved in combat (thus making a potential chain reaction).
EDIT: Only unwounded characters does the check above, wounded characters never join a group combat, but they can still be a part of it if they are the target of an attack.

For reference: This is described on page 11 of the DT-prison rulebook.

To be clear : if they are the initial target of the attack.
This means that only one defending wounded character can participate in a Group combat, as the others are not initial targets...

The rule of thumb I use is this: If you are adjacent to an enemy combatant and are not wounded, you also become a participant in that combat. There are exceptions to this (the Courtesan from Fire & Water and the Stone Elemental from Sylvan Creatures, for example), but with Prison it should help to keep it in mind.

I thought I had it all sorted out but in the new Prison rules this is the example of a group combat.

__ WY
2B 1B
3B YY

If 1B attacks YY then 3B is also involved in combat WY is wounded so it will not participate, no problem there, BUT if 1B attacks WY then only YY is involved. I thought 3B should also be involved in that attack as well. Printing error?

3B is involved. The paragraph (page 11) says, "If the blue Naga had instead attacked the yellow wounded, the group combat would have involved both yellow characters ... "

It doesn't say it excludes the Backstabber (3B), or changes the rules regarding who is in the group combat - that paragraph is to explain that Blue would be better off attacking the wounded Mechanork and triggering Group Combat than just attacking the Colossus to trigger group combat.

If Blue attacks the Colossus to trigger the combat, then they can only Wound the Colossus.
If Blue attacks the Mechanork, then (if they win), they can both wound the Colossus AND kill the Mechanork.
