While I've never met InkyGirl in person, few people come across as more avid fans of board games and BoardGame Geek than this Canadian artist and gamer. Many of us have enjoyed her gaming related comics and she recently posted a large portfolio of great photos from the last BGG con.
InkyGirl hasn't been on BGG as long as some of us, but she makes up for it in enthusiasm.
Without further ado, I present this week's Geek of the Week:
Debbie Ohi

YAY, a chance to play games during the DAY!! (I am cursed with morning person genes)

Here's her bio:
Quote: I grew up on the Game of Life, Stock Ticker, Masterpiece, Monopoly and Clue as well as card games like Crazy Eights, Rummy and Hearts. My sister, brother and I would make up our own games using paper, crayons and stuff we found around the house. I had a subscription to Games magazine and excitedly ordered the very first Dungeons & Dragons module when it came out. Pored over the instructions when they came, spent hours designing my own dungeon adventure. Played it once (ONCE!) with my family, but my parents forbade us from playing it again when my scary story frightened one of my young siblings to tears. Heard the wargames club at my school was playing D&D, so decided to go to a meeting. Quit the club after one session when it became clear that having a girl in their midst was too confusing for the guys. My brother & I took turns reading code from GAMES magazine into our TRS-80. I got hooked on text-based adventure games, and wrote my own. In fact, it was trying out the Crowther & Woods Colossal Cave on Computer Science Day at the University of Waterloo that convinced me to go into CSC at the University of Toronto. In university, of course, I found all kinds of kindred spirits like Tom West, clith, poslfit and aiabx who would play board games like Nuclear War, Junta, Talisman and Paranoia. And of course role-playing games like D&D, yay! My favourite D&D character: Charity the Hobbit in aiabx's campaign. To keep this as short as possible (ha), I'll skip over my obsessions with computer games like Rogue (the good ol' ASCII text version), Civilization, SimCity, and Myst. I met Jeff ( jridpath) while at the University of Toronto. We've been married 18 years, and I'm still madly in love with him. He games with friends most Friday nights but I don't usually participate because I'm SO not a night person, and they sometimes don't actually start playing until 8 or 9 pm. Occasionally I'd get together for a daytime gaming session, but only for special occasions. Then Jeff introduced me to BGG. He told me about all the cool people on the forums (and yes, he specifically mentioned YOU) and how much he enjoyed going to BGG.con every year. Me and BGG: Curious, I joined BGG and also attended my first BGG.con last year. You can see my BGG.con report here. Wow. I was in heaven. No matter how early I woke up, I could wander down to the games rooms and find people playing! Ok, so many of them had been up all night but STILL(!). Plus, unlike my experience back in high school, females were welcome AND just as enthusiastic as the guys. Though I didn't think it possible,I enjoyed this year's BGG.con even more. After the convention, I made an attempt to explain to my non-gamer blog readers why I love boardgaming so much. It's not just the gaming, it's the community. Everyone's just so darned friendly and welcoming -- reminds me a lot of the filk community. I've had fun posting comics but I've been gradually being pulled into other areas of BGG, plus I'm starting to investigate the Toronto Area Boardgaming Society more because of jridpath, belash and others. Oh, ack. I've gone on WAY longer than I expected. wargamer55 is going to kill me. You can learn more about my current tastes in games on my profile page. Super-condensed non-gaming info:I graduated from the University of Toronto with majors in CSC and PSY. Worked as a programmer/analyst at Toronto-Dominion (COBOL! ugh) for two years before quitting the corporate world and hurling myself into the arts, encouraged and supported by jridpath. Built a website. Sold a website. Wrote a book. I'm currently writing novels for young people and have a literary agent at Curtis Brown in NYC. I write songs for & perform with my filk group; we have several albums out & have performed concerts in Germany, England, U.S. and Canada. You can hear samples of our songs on our MySpace page. I'm a writer and cartoonist and post info and comics for writers in my Inkygirl blog. And here are my two truths and a lie:I jammed with Richard Hatch (Tom Zarek in the new Battlestar series / Apollo in the original BSG). He played drums, I played my flute. Seemed like a nice guy. I brunched with Steve Riggio (now CEO of Barnes & Noble) on 5th Avenue. I was really, really nervous. He wore brown corduroy pants and talked fast. When Deep Space Nine ended, I wrote a tribute to Captain Janeway that ended up getting printed in the TV Guide Collector's Edition: FAREWELL TO STAR TREK: DEEP SPACE NINE. My music group recorded the song for one of our CDs.
Some questions to get you started:
1. You're not a night person, so when DO you get to play games? 2. Has your love of gaming affected your art? 3. Are you good at Pictionary? 4. Have you ever played a wargame? If so, which one? And would you do it again? 5. There was a big controversy this week over Games Workshop's intellectual property policy. As an artist who creates copyrighted work and a gamer who might like to make fair use of copyrighted works, where do you think the line should be drawn?

Janeway? On Deep Space Nine? Liar, liar pants on fire.
Question! Text Adventures; do you still play them and do you prefer their 'successors', the point and click games with their graphics (like Myst) or do you prefer to let your imagination run wild with the text based descriptions?

Great choice Seth; congrats Debbie!
Love your cartoons. I see you write novels as well as cartoon AND perform in a folk (I assume!) music group. Again, I could use the non-existent jealous emoticon here.
Rogue, eh? What was the toughest letter to kill?
Enjoy your week. We expect to see a cartoon about the GOTW experience!

Congratulations on your GotW honor! Questions:
Who are your favorite cartoonists and what are your favorite comics/cartoons?
What do you love the most about BGG? What do you dislike the most about it?
Of the upcoming game releases, which ones are you looking forward to the most?
Merry Christmas!
Oh, and I think #3 is the lie.

Thanks SO much to wargamer55 for picking me as GotW. Wanting to make sure I fulfilled all my duties properly, I read over the Wiki page about the Geek of the Week tradition, and also found the list of past GotWs.
Some interesting stats: Only nine Canadians so far; I'm the 10th. I'm also the second Canadian female chosen. Sonja Elen Kisa (Sonja) was the first! I use an exclamation mark because I just played a game (Tobago) with Sonja at TABScon this afternoon. How very cool:
wargamer55 wrote: Some questions to get you started: 1. You're not a night person, so when DO you get to play games? 2. Has your love of gaming affected your art? 3. Are you good at Pictionary? 4. As an artist who creates copyrighted work and a gamer who might like to make fair use of copyrighted works, where do you think the line should be drawn?
1. Whenever my friends hold daytime gaming sessions, during BGG.con and TABScon. jridpath and I will also sometimes play relatively short two-player games in the early evening.
2. Oh yes. Sometimes I see elements of an illustration as game components! Plus at the last BGG.con, I got a great writing idea (novel for young people) that involves boardgaming. Hey -- does this mean I can write off expenses for my next BGG.con trip?
3. Some of my friends won't play Pictionary with me anymore. Thing is, artistic skill ISN'T the most important element of the game. It helps a great deal, of course, but I think that the ability to quickly figure out the best thing to draw to convey the answer is even more important. Especially in All Play turns, speed and efficiency is of the essence. Stick figures rule.
4. Until very recently, I used to refuse to play any wargames. But jridpath and several of my friends love wargames, and JUST TONIGHT on the way home from TABScon, I was asking jridpath about Advanced Squad Leader, a game our friend aiabx adores. I rolled my eyes and dismissed as something that sounded dull, but then Jeff explained why he enjoyed it. And you know, the narrative/storytelling aspect sounded pretty cool. I've already decided to ask aiabx if he'll teach me Squad Leader sometime. So my question for you wargamers out there: What wargames would you suggest to a wargame newbie?
5. re: Games Workshop's intellectual property policy. I've posted about the general GW workshop issue but I must have somehow missed the specific thread about artist copyright (I was spending too much time in Chit Chat, I think)! I'll check it out and answer this last question separately when I do.

AUGH!!!!!!!!! I totally mistyped that. I meant to say Commander Sisko. Major fail on "Two Truths and A Lie." Can I try again? Here goes:
MY REPLACEMENT TWO TRUTHS AND A LIE:
1. I have a love-hate relationship with squirrels that is so public that the Squirrel Liberation Front sent me a warning e-mail.
2. jridpath proposed to me during a two-player boardgaming session.
3. I am such a Classic Star Trek nerd that there was a time where I could identify an episode from just a 10-second musical clip.
Matchstickman wrote: Question! Text Adventures; do you still play them and do you prefer their 'successors', the point and click games with their graphics (like Myst) or do you prefer to let your imagination run wild with the text based descriptions?
I still play text adventures using Frotz on my iPhone. I still prefer them to graphics-heavy adventures. As you say, leaves more to the imagination and makes me feel as if I'm part of a book I'm reading.
And a question for YOU:
How did you discover Chunky Fighters? I just noticed this microbadge in your profile so checked out the game. It looks SO FUN!!!

Urban Tapestry is a filk group, but many people don't know the term so I sometimes use "folk" instead. I find the boardgaming community similar to the filk community in many ways. Both groups love a particular niche activity. Both groups are friendly and welcoming to newcomers.
wifwendell wrote: Rogue, eh? What was the toughest letter to kill?
The letter "U", which stood for a Black Unicorn. I never got all the way to bottom dungeon level, though, so maybe there were tougher monsters.
You can still play the ascii Rogue game online, by the way.
I tried playing a newer version of Rogue, with sophisticated graphics (sophisticated compared to ascii, that is). Bah, humbug. Wasn't NEARLY as fun.
wifwendell wrote: Enjoy your week. We expect to see a cartoon about the GOTW experience!
I'm already working on one. :-D
And here's a question for YOU:
I see from your profile you used to play D&D. What was your favourite character?

Hey, thanks very much!
I notice that you have Race for the Galaxy on your Top List -and- your Hot List.
I played RftG for the first time at BGG.con and confess that I was soooooooo lost despite the patient explaining of my fellow players. They told me, however, that it was pretty common to need a few times to fully understand the game.
Was this your experience, too?
Love your "I get bored with BGG is down" microbadge. I have SO been getting sucked into more and more forums on BGG! How do you manage your BGG time?!?

When the GOTW asks a question, you must answer!
Tough call. There were three I liked the most.
Mannfred Mann, the druid, whose assortment of little followers were naturally known as Mannfred Mann's Earth Band...
Achalor the assassin was a cool character. The only evil character I played, my buddy and I just ran solo adventures with him since I hated it when members of the party didn't cooperate.
And Tiresias the magic-user, who had a henchman known as Quasar Panasonic.

If the narrative element appeals to you the most (as opposed to strategic thinking or historical interest) I'd suggest a tactical game, but probably something less involved than ASL. It's great at narrative building, but you might find yourself too swamped by detail to get to the narrative part until you have more experience.
Godd narrative-building games that are popular right now include Wings of War: Miniatures, Heroscape Master Set: Rise of the Valkyrie and Memoir '44

Hmmmm, great question. I haven't really thought about this before but I think I'm drawn to cooperative gameplay systems, where the groups works together for a common goal, at least for part of the game.
Least favourite: games where backstabbing is part of the game mechanics.
