I honestly don't understand all the uppity responses when someone posts an attractive photo of their spouse/friend/sexual fantasy playing a boardgame, staged or otherwise.

Note: This is NOT my photo! She is NOT my wife/fiancée/girlfriend/mistress/lover/daughter/sex kitten.

No one seems to complain much when carmakers do it.

Wouldn't it benefit the hobby, and us gamers in general, if boardgaming became sexy and hip? As the premiere web destination for boardgaming, and thus a large influencer of public perception of gaming, shouldn't we support that?

Not in my opinion. I guess I just prefer modesty over sexy. And, using your comparrison of the auto industry, I would NEVER purchase a car just because an attractive model was standing by it. Nor would I purchase a game for the same reason.

True, both can use sex to attract attention, but I personally would much more be attracted by better gameplay, components, strategy, etc. And for cars: better MPG, quality, features, etc.

Just my two cents because you asked.

Actually, it is.

If you're one of the few who keeps wondering why it isn't and not actively using it for the sex and hip factor, well, I think it's time to join the real world.

I see no problem with it. I think the stereotypical view of board game players is lonely, single guys who get together to play war games, families and nerds. I'm down with anything that destroys stereotypes. Don't worry however, females have been encroaching on male dominated activities a lot lately. Video games, heavy metal, comic books, politics ( ), so it's only a matter of time.

Besides, nothing is sexier than getting beat be a good looking gal.....at board games.

'attractive photo' is great, 'tit's out for thumbs' is not so great.

I'd love it if boardgaming became sexy and hip. I just wish there weren't so many BGG users who wanted to keep it puerile.

I do enjoy those pics with attractive women. I also approve of "Tits for thumbs". I give those thumbs! If BGG'ers want to be offended by attractive women, that is their choice as individuals. Their voiced hostility is a vote against, and here is my vote for.

But remember this is still the internet...don't feed the trolls!

Sexuality in board games certainly would sell me! As long as the boardgame is good, mind you. Quality over aesthetics. I have disdain for those that object to a little bit of spice in a few boardgames like Amytis for example, or Blue Moon City card game. Typically these are the religious / morality police of the net, and they ruin the fun for many of us.

My pet peeve is when artists deliberately do stupid things with a particular theme that should require some sexuality, like the Harem card in Dominion.

I would appreciate if more companies would offer mature and family friendly versions of the art in certain games. There was a wargame company that had alternate art for a game about a celtic queen who fought the Romans, that was nice. I didn't buy it because while I enjoyed the sexuality it was overdone. I want realistic depictions of the human body. See for example the slave woman on the cover of Struggle of Empires. Obviously that is not meant to be sexual nor do I see it that way, but I do enjoy that artistic touch.

The whiners are a vocal minority.

Ignore them. :p

I'll enjoy them when I see them, but consider me a member of the voiceless majority. I see no reason to peep up most of the time, but keep 'em coming ;)

The only reason those pictures bother me is because 90% of the time they are very obviously not about the board game. The difference between picture A and Picture B, is that B was created as a promotional item for the car. It says, "sexy women love our cars." Picture A says, "Check this shit out! My wife/girlfriend is hot."

Promoting your car is ok, Pimping your wife/girlfriend is not.

Don't get me wrong I love boobies, just the motivation and its relation to this website is irritating.

I'll never post a crappy comment or put down anyone for posting them, but in response to your query that is why hottie pictures tend to attract negative comments.

All my opinion BTW

I personally have no problem with the picture. I just want the rules for Strip Dominion if they are still available.

*rimshot* Thank you, I'll be here for the next couple of hours

I don't think that many BGG members are trying to keep things G rated, but maybe things are going the way of the R rating on some. I do not mind a boob or two. I love seeing attractive and sexy ladies playing boardgames, in fact, the more the merrier. But, when we get to the 'tits out' phase of the pics...

Can we have an adults-only board gaming picture area? laugh

It might be that this was an actual shot during the game, but I am sure that some members think it is playing to the lesser developed members visual satisfaction in order to get lots of thumbs. I can't say for sure, but ... I'd thumb it

*slap* But Honey! It was just a joke! Put away that brick! Woman! Don't hit the compu..... *crackle fizt*

Are we talking about the picture at the top of this page? You can see more than that just going to the beach.

FTR I don't have a huge problem with it, I just don't really see sexuality making board games any more successful. Given, there is a certain segment of gamers who are really about theme that some gratuitous flesh would attract, but they're usually in up to their necks anyway. Most gamers are interested in games for the intellectual stimulation, and while a healthy pair of breasts staring at you from your character card isn't (usually) going to turn you off to the game, it's not going to get you to buy it either.

People buy fancy cars most of the time (IMHO) because they want to feel young, hip, sexy, etc.... They're very much an image thing. Ergo plunking a pair of boobs down next to the car feeds the image a lot. The impulse to buy is very different.

I do have to admit that I find the puerile form which most sexuality in games takes annoying, but that's not why I play board games. If I want an adrenaline rush with boobs, I'll go play Bayonetta (which BTW is excellent). If I want to think deeply about player interaction, I'll break out Agricola. Let games have their niche.

Iirc, I saw a video on Machinima where there was a debate about video game sexuality which dealt with some of the same issues. Actually some interesting stuff said. Worth looking up, if you're bored. I have to admit, it's usually dumb and obnoxious even in video games (where it's generally more accepted), but I do find the campy, overdone, and almost sarcastic sexuality of Bayonetta entertaining, even if it goes too far at points.

Yes, people do. Regardless of whether it's cars, or video games (E3), or beer, or board games. The arguments usually revolve around issues of female objectification (for instance, why are only scantily clad women featured in commercials for these things?). Whether you want to accept those arguments or not is besides the point; people are going to make them, and they have a right to.

In respect to video games, If I have to stare at someone's butt for 12 hours it may as well be a female one.
