England starts off the period with the Act of Supremacy forcing the English Civil War. He prepared for this by having a large bank and so was pretty much able to roll up the unsupported Royalists. The war opened with a couple of draw battles in Hull and Midlands with the Royalists taking the brunt of losses. At Midlands the Roy Monarch was killed and Cromwell wounded for 3 turns! Due to poor play, the remnants of the Royalist army were thrown piecemeal at the English resulting in the Royalists only occupying Lancashire with a LD. The only light at the end of the tunnel was that the English were so bloodied from a few fruitless assaults vs. Lancashire, that he was not even able to besiege it by the end of the turn.
England made slow headway vs. the revolts and the pirates, finishing them off on the last MR mostly due to Cromwell going to Ireland to put them down. So, the long turn helped England immensely. (Note we made an error and should have given him 6, not just 3 revolts. This will be fixed later by randomly assigning him 3 extra revolts. Doesn’t make up for it, but helps.)
France begins with an MC moving 4 privateers out to various seas, armies to Artois, Milan, and Rousillon. The latter catches a newly arrived Tu army there and during the first combat between Fr and Tu, the French are hugely victorious, though not a major battle. Artois, Nord, and Rousillon are all munched, but the fighting in Savoia, first defense then counterattack, draws in more and more French troops to destruction. This turn is a case of how a country can win most of the battles (France), but not win the war as the allies took too many troops and provinces from France. As well, all of the privateers are killed before they can attack any fleets. France is now really beginning to explore all over the Caribbean and Atlantic.
The Portuguese once again commit their lone army to the fight, this time in Gascony. After taking this it moves to Languedoc and you actually see the Turks and Portuguese stacked together under the awesome leadership of Almeida. After that is taken and held against the invariable French counterattack, then the Portuguese move to Provence taking that in combination with the Spanish. Genoa fights all over SE France and N Italy, until it’s army is just a shell, while its navy blockades any port along the coast that the allies would need to take.
Spain also tries doing an MC and over several turns lands in Bretagne (a foolish and costly mistake), as well as moving into Adour, Gascony, Provence, Savoia and Luca and he helps the Portuguese in Gascony. Most of these provinces are ultimately taken. The attack on Savoia is ultimately successful and by the end of the turn after several battles, it succeeds. Luca is harder for him as Sp is repeatedly stopped by the Toscana LD and forced to retreat, resulting in its existence and control of Luca even at the end of the turn.
Turkey had combat on several fronts, but had the armies and allies to fight effectively. Florence was attacked first and then sieged until conquered. Then Azerbijan (the most fought over Persian province) was targeted. The assault without breach failed (for like the 3 time). Eventually, there are two almost full Turkish armies fighting in N. Spain/S. France. They helped take Languedoc, Guyenne and take back Roussilon. Siege rolling was atrocious with 1’s &2’s rolled, but the time factor evening that out. Azerbijan and Florence fall on the last MR. Turkey also engages in massive discovery all along the Indian subcontinent in an effort to have some discoveries to sell to various countries. Due to Persia picking defensive (a mistake) and the scattered location of it’s provinces: Georgia and Azerbijan, Kurdistan, Mechmed and Ormuz (taken already); its forces are easily trapped inside its cities and slowly annihilated by the Venetian and Turkish forces. However, this doesn’t stop Venice from losing, then drawing a battle in Mechmed. Luckily, though in the first Mechmed battle Venice killed the Persian general (234!) there and so nullified the leadership advantage.
Venice then spends a few rounds moving troops and then audaciously attacks the Shah with two full armies in the mountains of Georgia resulting in a draw that forces the Shah into the city (with minimal losses) and a tiny Venetian army, barely able to besiege and the death of Venice’s ?general. However, using the treachery event, allows him to take the city and capture the Shah! Excellent play! The rest of the turn sees Venice sailing his troops home in time for a victory parade, dragging the Persian Shah in chains.
*End Phases
France and Spain, Portugal, Turkey go to White Peace, the result of the first Wars in Italy. This was a case of France winning most battles, but the allies taking the provinces. It was nearing a draw, but both sides were exhausted and ready for peace. Spain wanted to continue on, but Turkey had signed up to help defend Spain, not to kill France, and so was to withdraw his support in T8 if the war didn’t end. White Peace resulted.
Turkey and Spain gain level 5 peace from Toscana. Turkey gains 150D, while Spain pulls his troops out to fight in Northern Italy and only gains VPs.
Turkey and Venice finally kill Persia at level 5 peace. Turkey gains Azerbijan, Kurdistan, and Ormuz. Venice gains money, some other bogus declarations giving VPs, and defensive help later in the period. Persia, at this point, remained Georgia and Mechmed (level 3 and capital).

England comes out on the second turn of the Civil War ready for blood and gets it on round one with the complete annihilation of the Royalist forces. This is followed up by the siege of Lancashire (last Royalist city), which is won after a couple of MRs worth of siege. This ends the English activity for the turn.
France conducts his attack on Helvetica well. He strikes them and drives them into the city and then constricts until they surrender. There is also more searching, this time around Africa.
Portugal finishes his discovery of Amazonia, fills in the remainder of seas, and is the first to arrive in Alaska by sea.
Spain, in a rare break from action in Europe, took the whole 8 MR subduing the Incas. Initially, there was the destruction of the natives around and the capture of Cuzco led by Cortez. At the same time Pizarro led another force to destroy natives in another Inca province. With the capture of Cuzco and reduction of the Indian population, it was only a matter of time before the duo of Cortez and Pizarro subjugated the Incas.
Turkey took this turn with no major wars looming to concentrate on finishing up in his backyard and destroying the Toscanians again. First, was the investiture of Florence again. Then was the overrunning of Jordan and Arabia. Within a few rounds both were taken. Turkey also left a few armies on the Hapsburg/Polish border in preparation for the next turn. There was more discovering in India. At this point almost all of the coast of East Africa and India are discovered by the Turks.
Fresh off of its victory over Persia, Venice confidently sails to Cyrenacia where it is presently thrubbed and sent packing back to its fleets to the tune of no losses to the Cyrenacians. Not having enough land troops to continue the war, Venice retires back home and licks his wounds.
Though most people were done around the 3rd MR, the turn dragged on and on for 7 rounds.
*End Phases

France conquers the Swiss and gains the 10 Swiss mercenary advantage.

England and Portugal combined to destroy the Hanseatic League. The allies picked to hit cities that had only level 1 or 2 fortresses. With Almeida in charge, it was just a matter of not rolling horribly. Even with a short turn, with the number of forces and Almeida, it was an easy exercise. They took Mecklemburg, Bremen, and Kiel (scuttling the Hansa fleet). [*Note: Portugal took the Genoans to fight in Hansa. This was too far for them and they were substituted for Portuguese troops midway through the turn.] England takes Ceylan city.
France did nothing.
Spain once again tries to land in Luca and gets beaten back onto his ships. The following MR, however, he lands, kills the inhabitants, and then successfully storms the city walls. Meanwhile, he puts down a revolt and begins to discover up to the Rocky’s Region of North America.
Turkey Once again goes to Florence, through Naples following a well-worn path. Florence and the Steppes are both taken. A bit more exploring into SE Asia and S China Sea, but it’s getting too expensive for the apparent worth.
Venice kills some pirates in the Adriatic.

England basically follows through with the time honored and successful tactic of killing Hansa. With no HRE army doing anything and France and Spain busy, it is an easy job.
Portugal again leads the attack on Hansa with Almeida. Basically, again they and the English just move space to space conquering cities. In the RotW, the Portuguese finish up exploring the Amazon and attempts to land in Oman. After they are repulsed, the Turks make nice by doling out ND of one unit for the Portuguese to kill of and build up his peace differential. Finally, Pt kills of the pirates in the Straits of Formosa.
The French and Spanish and their allies spread out to conquer the League all in one turn. The first round they move into Hesse, Wurtemburg and Thurigen, including the first battle with Tercios, and in the next they move units into Hanover and Saxony. The first three battles are all allied victories, though the Wurtemburg fight sees the death of Guise! They destroy the Saxon army, but the conscript LD2 busts the siege and runs them off of Saxony and defends its capital for no losses (!) for the rest of the turn (4 MRs).
They had a horrible time fighting the very few forces from the League. Much of the rest of the turn is a comedy of errors of overstacking and bouncing (sim rules) and not having enough to siege. A battle in Venice is won, but not enough to siege and not reinforced. This was played out many times this turn. Finally, Wurtemburg, Thurigen, and Hesse were taken knocking these out of the war. The allies fail vs. Hanover and Saxony, but take Mantua.
Rather than concentrating on the League, the Hapsburgs and Poles focus on the Turks to their detriment. Most of the Turkish minors strike at Poland, while the Turks hit the joint between the two armies as well as moving towards the gold producing areas of Carinthia and Styria. Worones and Galicia fall. This is quickly followed by the destruction of the majority of the Polish army. This prompts Kharov, Volhynia, and Ukraine to be captured.
Just after the destruction of the Polish army, we see the destruction of the Hapsburgs armies, when they launch an assault against the Sultan (253A) in the mountains of Carinthia. Carinthia, Carnolia, and Carpathia fall to the Turks and their allies. Finally, the remnants of the Polish armies are defeated and the leaders captured in a silly, outnumbered battle outside of Worones. Meanwhile, Turkey also removes a revolt in Kosovo.
Venice has to quell the revolt in Corfu, as well as protect his minors. The Hanoverians and Hessians march straight to Sudeten and fail in an assault three times (one with breach) and eventually is forced to retreat due to being out of supply! Other than that, Venice then becomes a master of guerrilla warfare, sending a small force into the allied sieging forces to forces them to either retreat or lose enough units so that the siege was broken. A classic case of too few allied units, spread too thinly. As Venice, is using the minors effectively in the north, his indigenous troops are invading S Italy, eventually taking Luca, Sicilia, Naples,
*End Phases
France and Spain conquer Wurtemburg, Thurigen, and Hesse. Where possible France took money and Spain took reconversion.
England goes to white peace with Turkey
Portugal goes to white peace with Tu and peace with Oman
Turkey Annexes Donetsk, Volhynia and 150D from Poland but fails vs. the Hapsburgs
At this point there was some bad blood between Spain and Venice. Both were accusing the other of “breaking their word” on some gentleman’s agreement about not expanding the war. Venice actually struck first and so hardened the anti-player attitude of both France and Spain vs. Venice and (in France’s case) even Holland. It’ll be interesting to see how this plays out.

England with his faithful ally, Latvia, begin the attack into the morass of Poland. Luckily, all but a few of the Poles are facing the Turks and England turns that and the fact that his tech is ARQ to his benefit. He beings by sieging Danzig and Lithuania then follows that up with assaulting Bielorossya, Polotsk and sieging Podalsia. The turn rounds out with two forces attacking the English/Latvian stacks in Polotsk and Podalsia on the last round, but to a draw with the Poles retreating.
Portugal moves his main stack, led by Almeida, to March where he joins up with an English unit. Then they advance to Tyne and begin the siege without a Scotsman to be seen as far as the eye can travel. [*Note: Venice, controlling Scotland, has the Scottish army move to Solvay, but not siege in an effort to get them killed and get the English to owe him a favor later. Also, a bit out of spite for all four of the others joining in and making him run the country.] The English land in Hebrides, cutting the Scots Army out of supply, and both Hebrides (an assault where monarch Cromwell dies) and Tyne (sieged by Almeida) are easily captured.
The French and Spanish once again commence their turns with a barrage of attacks and a MC each. They hit Hanover, Mantua, Emilia, Munster, Oldenburg, Anhalt and are surprised by a small Venetian sortie out of Venice into Tyrol (which fails miserably, but delays entry into Venice). The allies win in Mantua, but France loses a major battle to Turkey and Algeria (with pashas!) in Venice and is forced to retreat. However they come back with a vengeance and demolish the Turk and Algerian’s armies (not a major battle though!) firmly instilling themselves in siege in Venice and finally, on the last round, gaining a usure+ to continue the siege into the next turn.
As usual Venice, who was up to his prized tactics of hit and run with small units, breaks several sieges in Emilia (twice), Romagna, and Hanover; but finds himself rapidly running out of troops. So, with the fewer number of enemies and territory to take, the French and Spanish begin to turn the tide, taking Anhalt, Saxony, Mantua, Hanover, Oldenburg and remaining in Venice and Emilia to continue sieges. The question is can they get enough units down from the north in quickly enough to help in the fight.
Turkey again assesses that Poland is the bigger threat, partially due to the paucity of troops that the Hapsbrugs have from fighting last turn, and so commits the majority of Turkish and allied troops to fight Poland. However, overall, Styria is the goal of this turn. On the first round, the battle of Styria led personally by the Sultan, ends with the Hapsburgs in flight, and HW vs. the city! That ended the war for the Hapsburgs, except for Erbland, Carpathia, and Carnolia being taken, and it was on to Poland.
[*Note: Poland had one A+ just sitting in the area between the English and Turkish attacks. It was mostly wasted until the last MR.] Poland decided to do what the Turks do, to knock out minors, so on the first MR he headed straight towards Kazan where he botches the siege and assault (splitting his force into two spaces with 1A+ and 1LD rather than the two A+ which would have taken Kazan). Meanwhile the Turks, are force marching units near Kazan and taking Kharkov and Ukraine. Galicia holds out for several assault, but finally succumbs. The Poles in Worones leave allowing those in Kazan out of supply. They are attacked as they retreat and virtually wiped out. With the losses of provinces inflicted by the English, there is more than enough provinces to unconditional peace Poland.
Venice with some Algerian help lands in Catalunya as a surprise, but the landing force is quickly surrounded and ejected. The reverse happens in Pouilles and Messina where forces of Venetians and Algerians sandwich two small forces between Naples and Sicily, but after killing most of the troops in Messina, the lack of numbers for siege forces a retreat back to Sicily. Eventually, Pouilles is taken to consolidate the gains in Southern Italy.
*End Phases
England and Turkey go to level 5 peace with Poland. England takes Danzig; Turkey takes Kharkov and 150D.
France and Spain conquer Hanover and Saxony, with France taking (150D) each and Spain reconverting. They also possibly have Venice on the ropes.

England takes his time getting to his two revolts, but kills them both during the short turn. We have yet to see a revolt go over one turn. He also does some discovering gaining the N. China Sea, Canton, Nankin, and Luzon.
France and Spain focus solely on taking Venice. They have had 3 rounds already at the start of turn 12 and so spend the turn trying to break in while Turkey and Venice try to stop them. Meanwhile, they capture Emilia. They retain Mantua and so capturing Venice will ensure a level 5 peace. They don’t get it.
The Fr and Sp do win or tie, causing their opponents to retreat, in several battles in Romagna, Venice, and Emilia. Though they never are able to have enough forces to siege Romagna.
Spain also attempts to get to Romagna, but fails to due Turkish, Algerian, and Venetian LDs that block him repeatedly. Spain also goes on a discovery spree with a large swath of Kansas, Illinios, Nevada, Carolina and the Rockies, as well as stuff in Inca and Orenoque. France discovers areas of Terre Neuve and Louisiana.
Portugal fails at killing the Pirate in the France CTZ and explores the Gujarat Coast setting up for a COL for later.
The Turks attack and take Georgia early. Then finding the Spanish-backed Persians besieging Ormuz (mistakenly), they force-march to Mechmed (the capital and only remaining city) with the help of the Crimeans. This cuts off the Persians from supply, causing them to die horribly during the third round. Unfortunately, the turn ends too soon, so Tu only gains Georgia.
Venice attempts to break the siege in Venice and is smacked badly. Regrouping by round 3 and with Algerian help, they try again in Venice, but are beaten again and lose a major battle. (This is partially due to the fact that Algeria is Ren and the rest are ARQ.) The turn ends quickly, with very few Venetian troops and money left and a very low stability.
*End Phases
After much negotiation, back and forth Fr and Sp decide that most likely they have a good chance to beat Ve in the following turn, but the cost in Stab and other factors is too high. Instead they settle for a lesser peace and the war does not go into a fourth turn. France and Spain gain a level one peace from Turkey and Venice, whereby Venice cedes Mantua to France.
Turkey only goes to level 1 peace with Persia gaining Georgia.

We had bad weather on rounds 1, 4, 5 & 6. England eventually with the help of Portugal, whips up a bit on the Danes. Though the siege of Malmo, takes all of the rounds to happen.
The French meanwhile, marshaled his Savoian and French forces to march to the aid of the Poles, and to retake Hapsburg gold provinces from Turkey. France makes a couple of attacks with small stacks into fully stacked Turkish double armies in Styria until there are none left.
The Poles and Turkish big stacks smacked speedbump opponents early on, but met face-to-face on round 3& 4 in Ukraine. The Poles don’t break, but have to retreat twice losing their leader the second time. The Crimean Khan dies in the same round taking Seweria. Psycho France continues to attack with the diminished Poles, as Turkey takes Volhynia & Ukraine.
Spain tools around in Louisiana and the hinterlands of South America doing discoveries and such, while Venice munches on Tunis. Even with 3 B results, he does not assault, rather finally accepting a surrender on round 6.

This is a series of comments by the players. We do one set before the period, which is turned in secretly with the Period Objectives and showed at the end of the period. The second set is an AAR (After Action Review) of the played period.
PERIOD II Beginning Objectives
*-*-*-* ENGLAND In period I England chose to go protestant when the Reform happened for the second time. This was chosen to coincide with England’s second period goals. In period II England will focus on three main areas: 1) The first is to expand its empire by conquering minor countries, countries such as Denmark and the remainder of Scotland. 2) Secondly, to build it’s colonial empire thus increasing its income and gaining prosperity. 3) Thirdly, is to increase the number of commercial fleets. I will be doing this in preparation for the entry of the Netherlands. These areas will be the focus of England’s efforts during Period II.
*-*-*-* FRANCE France main focus will by on gaining France Compte, Rousilon, Milano and Belgium provinces. If not possible to achieve soon or easily, focus will go to Al Djazair.
I will ally against Spain all the time. Only when Turkey really becomes too strong, will I consider allying with Spain (rather die a 1000 deaths...)
I will focus on land war. Diplomacy will be focused on Poland, Savoia, Bayern and Toscana.
*-*-*-* PORTUGAL The great empire of portugal hopes to maintain its dominance in the Rotw with allowing few colonies to any other player, and also by building ever larger colonies and trading posts.
I will still need to juggle politics carefully as there are several players who may be offended by the actions of the portugese in this war in France. Here again, politics must be carefully maintained. I hope to keep a strong spain in play and on my side and will attempt to keep a neutral turkey also.
*-*-*-* SPAIN Original Spain Period II Goals
The war in Italy has worked out to my benefit as I have been able to attain yet another province. I have also succeeded in making alliances with England and Portugal. Maintaining a friendship with France was not an option for the 1st period and it appears that it will not work out in the 2nd either. It does not matter who plays France, they are all egotistical crazies that think they can ask for whatever they want just because they threaten war. If the war goes well in this war, then I may be able to ‘persuade’ France to side with me against the Netherlands in period 3. Also, America is very important. As soon as I get the opportunity, I will take any of France’s TP’s or colonies just because I can. Gold is also very important so I need to take on the Inca’s first, then Orenoque as soon as possible. Gold is the only way I can maintain my money in period 3.
THEN
SPAIN New Spain Period II Goals
My objectives for this period are: I will recover the control of the boot (Charles never would have lost control of Naples), in addition I think that Spain has to control and protect the Spanish Path to Flanders. I have just seen that Hapsburgs are lost, so I am going to make a European treaty with Turkey. In addition, I will try to do the same with England about America.
About commerce I will spread spanish colonies throughout South America, and I will do an effort to recover spanish CTZ.
*-*-*-* TURKEY
Well, last period I had some pretty good luck and took a lot of territory. I know that France is gunning for me (which is ironic since he is supposed to be my ally) and if he lobbies hard against me this period, I’ll return the favor during the third period during his little “crisis” of civil war.
I worked well with Spain in the last period and hope to continue to do so to some extent. I can see us working together a bit to smash Venice. Venice has stated that Spain is his biggest enemy starting in period III and he’s going to try to undermine Spain somewhat. So, since Spain will want Venice’s provinces in Italy and I want Venice’s provinces in the Aegean and the Balkans, the two of us will probably work together.
This will not be permanent as I will also have to smack the Hapsburgs to gain a prov or six. I am majorly targeting Styria (two gold mines), Carinthia (one gold mine), and Austria (50VP & other stuff). I’m not sure if I can take all or even most of Hapsburgs, but I will make a supreme effort to obtain these three provinces. (It helps that they are on my border!)
Regarding, Poland I am unsure. Depending upon whether fighting alone or in conjunction with others (such as the Hapsburgs!) will determine whether I am going to attempt to gain ground or just hold what I have. Target provinces will be Donestk, Kharkov, Ukranya, and Volhynia.
I plan to finish off Persia (hopefully just two provinces) and militarily annex Arabia.
Diplomatically, I plan on gaining all of N. Africa, Astrakhan, and Kazan, as well as keeping the Balkans minors and Crimea. If I gain most of these I could see attempting to play around in the German states. For my main three minors, Algeria, Crimea, and Transylvania, I plan on upgrading all of their fortresses to level three as soon as possible.
Even though not coming into the game this period, I see Russia as one of my big adversaries. I will work to hamper his advances. So, I will defend Kazan (if I ever get them on my track). I will however, strongly defend Astrakhan. This is my buffer state for Crimea. I hope to make is so strong that in period III when he comes in he’ll go east and west rather than south.
I think that the crusades COULD be bad this period. It’ll depend on if they can coalesce together and fight united or not. I will play on the Fr-Sp rivalry. I will attempt to avoid conflict with Portugal, but it the Indian Ocean war event is rolled, I’ll push the war to the limit.
I plan on really going forward with Indian Ocean expansion. I lost my outside Europe admiral and lose my named one on turn 9, so it’ll be hard reinforcing after that. I’m going to finish up my discoveries and then just try to make COL and TP.
That’s about it! I hope to see my borders continue to expand, while maintaining what I have. Tough period coming up, but I have a lot of advantages.
*-*-*-* Venice General Goals I want to try and pick up some VPs through wars with minors, but try to evade any major conflict. I would like to prepare myself for the eventual running of the Netherlands. I want to cripple Spain’s ability to engage the Netherlands so I can dictate the outcome of the war. I want to pick up some more territory in Italy, but I think that might be difficult.
End of PERIOD II Comments
*-*-*-* ENGLAND England prospered greatly in Period II. Its colonial empire grew greatly as did its territories. Turning Protestant early paid off greatly. Also having excellent relations with Turkey allowed England to gain many discoveries. In turn this made it easier to place colonies and trading posts.
Furthermore, England finished it's conquest of Scotland. Because of this any future wars with Scotland should be much easier to win. England also gained Sweeden, Hanover, and Prussia on its track. This increases military might and decreases vulnerability.
Finally, Portugul proved to be a very profitable ally and of great help to England in gaining wealth and new territories.
*-*-*-* FRANCE Goals of France were to gain control of Rousilion, France Compte, Milano and Artois.
The war at the start of Period II versus Spain and Turkey started all right but could not be pushed to the end. The alliance, which I wanted to break, did not break. After that I made the decision that I had to ally with either Spain or Turkey to break that coalition.
I chose Spain for two reasons: My VP were low and I expected to gain over 40 vs. the League of Schmalken. Unfortunately Venice joined the Protestants and let Turkey in taking on the Poles and costing me the 40 VP again, as well as, bringing the Habsburg gold mines to Turkey.
The other reason to choose Spain over Turkey was the strong position of the Sultan. Due to Spanish and Venetian lack of action against Turkey, I tried to form an alliance vs. the Sultan. It failed...and I paid highly in VP. Now I have no more intention to save the Christian world. Spain and Russia will be pressed very hard in doing that. France does not want to fight the Sultan any more.....Good luck!!
Also, I finally decided after the turn 7-8 war, that diplomacy would bring me provinces sooner than war. That worked since I now have Roussilion and Franche Compte. My position is quite strong and solid, only the VP are low.
In the RotW, the discoveries are enough to start a colonial empire as soon as the religious wars are over.
Period III will likely bring some negative payback from Turkey so wait until period IV to try to rescue the game...
*-*-*-* PORTUGAL I feel as portugal that I could not have done better. I participated in more wars that I expected and was greatly successful. I also met all my period objectives as there are no other TPs in asia, and I was able to maintain a peaceful attitude with Turkey which allowed all my holdings to expand.
I don't feel that I could have earned any more VPs this period. I also have established great diplomacy with the other countries to help the poor russian at the start.
*-*-*-* SPAIN
Spain in this period has got a good level of Colonies in America. The wars have not been too tough for me, although the Spanish economy is still much too dependent on gold and Trade Center. :-(
Unluckily, Spain has not looked to Med and not has been clever enough to fight Trafalgar against Turks. (This period Spain forgot Med.)
*-*-*-* TURKEY Well, I had a fantastic period again. Perhaps not as great as Period I, but excellent none-the-less. France worked, pretty unsuccessfully, to undermine me the whole period. Near the end, he has realized that just fighting me was not winning him the game, so hopefully we’ve come to some understanding.
Near the end of Period I, Venice had turned a bit sour towards me, but with Spain and France somewhat joining during a lot of Period II (after the initial wars early on in the period), Venice was isolated. I was working with Spain pretty well, dowing minors with him to gain VP’s and $d. I was even avoiding killing the Hapsburgs, but then about turn 9 or 10 he just stopped working with me. This was the time that Venice was becoming increasingly isolated. So, some backroom deals were made and Turkey and Venice were a block again, for a cost. Venice ceded Creta and Illyria to me. This pissed of both France and Spain to no end and much of the middle and end of the period was an effort to defend Venice while I crushed the Poles, Persians, and Hapsburgs, though mostly the former.
Amazingly, France never built a navy and Spain kept his either in port (galleys) or away around America. Very odd, as this allowed Venice and I to be very mobile.
While working with Spain, we dowed and beat Toscana about 3 or 4 times. We also did Steppes (for $d) and Arabia (for annexation). All in all, the beginning of this period was marked by Turkey kicking the crap out of minors for money, VPs, and provinces.
I did take the provinces from Poland that I had on my goals list at the beginning of the period. I got Kharkov, Donetsk, Ukraine, and Volhynia. I have taken about all that I want to take (or more likely can attempt to hold) from Poland. Only the last war was close, as Poland was ARQ and my Muslim minors were REN.
The Hapsburgs’ forces were pretty easily beaten as they mostly charged me in the mountains, while I usually had better leaders and bigger armies. I haven’t seen the new Spain play them yet, but his play of Spain while at war was pretty good. (To give Adam some credit, this was his first wargame and he did pretty well with Spain, though not with the Hapsburgs.)
Both Persia and Russia reared their ugly heads at the wrong time. With Persia, I had saved Georgia as one of their provinces (as it borders crimea) though I made sure to take it each turn so that it was a level one fortress. They also had Mechmed (as their capital). So when they surprise dowed me, I had to scramble to stop them. Then the turn ended quickly, so I couldn’t get any money out of them. I just went for level 1 and Georgia. (I wanted to keep one province, so that if they dow me in the future, they don’t reannex some of my provinces to start with.)
Russia took Kazan on an awkward turn when I was at war with Poland and France (both ARQ). My armies had just hugely increased in cost and my minors were at REN. So, I just meekly submitted to giving up Kazan. Man that sucked.
I had some hit and miss COL, TP, and Comm Fleet placement this period, though mostly positive. I got a minor monopoly in the W Black and Oman Seas. I just started the Ionian and Caspian Seas. I have gone hard for COL/TP and tried to protect them with forts or fortresses. By the end of the period, for COL I had Irak at level 4 (level 2 fortress) and Mascareignes North at level 2 (level 2 fortress). For TP, I had Madagascar N at level 1 (and fort), Tanganika at level 1 (and fort), and Mozambika at level 4 (and fort).
Then in an amazing coup of diplomacy, I traded allowing Portugal the Spice and Slave monopolies, plus giving up Kazan, a future dip action, and future alliance against Poland for Goa! It was a level 4 COL with level 3 fortress. It was a great trade for both of us. (We later found that this was illegal, but consensus was that it would have been too difficult to go back and replay the whole turn.)
Finally, I was completely tripped up by all five players ganging up on me diplomatically in the last turn. They had Venice dow 5 minors and all of them responded (at the cost of -1 stab total each), then proceeded to smack the minors that I had to run. Interesting. I hope that this is the last time that they can all get together against me.
I have been lucky with no crusades this period and only one (or two) revolt (s). That can’t last though.
All in all, I am happy with this period. I am a bit worried about the cost of my forces and the size of my empire. This makes me have to move long distances over crappy terrain and it also makes me a huge target. I am double anyone else in VP, but this has been closing over the last few turns as I am gaining less than before. I had a huge jump in the middle of the period with many of my minors at war. Next period will be interesting, though my “happy time” is over, as everyone with ARQ sucks. Now others armies are starting to catch up to me in size and in Art they are surpassing me.
*-*-*-* VENICE I’m 0/2 on in comparing what I thought at the outlook and what happened during the period. I was not able to engage in too many minor conflicts since we had the major World War between France/Spain and Turkey/Venice. I do think though, that maybe I was too “gung-ho” to go after Spain early on and that clouded my judgment. In retrospect, I think I should have made more deals with Spain to avert the situation rather than being so hostile. I think that I should have allied a bit against Turkey, just to slow down his expansion a bit. I do think I set myself up nicely to take over the Netherlands.

Here are the treaties and diplomatic utterances that I still have for Period II.
Diplomacy in Print and Treaties - Period II
*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-* Treaty of Irak - Toscana Second turn 1520 (Turn 7)
From the 1515 treaty: B. On 1520 (Turn 7), further offensive dow’s may be agreed upon by any two or three of the players.
The following shall be an offensive and defensive alliance between the great Empires of Spain and Turkey.
I. Offensive Alliance - A. On turn 7, vs. Toscana: The offensive alliance shall be where Turkey will declare war (-1 Stab) on turn 7 upon the infidel country of Toscana. Spain will respond and also dow Toscana. (-1 Stab loss)
1. Spain will concentrate on taking and annexing the province of Luca.
2. Turkey will take Firenze and receive 150D.
3. In return for this needed assistance of the Turks for the Spanish, Turkey shall be released from its obligation of 50D to be paid to Spain on turn 8 and Spain shall make an offensive alliance and dow either Persia or Arabia at Turkey’s convenience sometime during Period II giving up all rights to land. To guarantee the latter clause, the 50D that was to be paid to Spain on turn 7 will be paid on the round that Spain makes said declaration.
II. Defensive Alliance - A. The Defensive Alliance is still in effect.
III. Penalties - 1. If any party breaks the alliance then the offending power shall lose an additional -2 Stab. The other power gains a CB vs. the offending power and may decide to continue upholding the agreement or not.
IV. Crusade & War- 1. Whether or not a Crusade is called or whether or not Spain and Turkey go to war during the period, this deal shall stand. If at war, then the deal shall be on hold. War in this case will not involve a stability loss for breaking the treaty, as the treaty will still be in effect just in a state of statis.
*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-* Treaty of Arabia, T8-9
Spain and Tu will form an offensive/defensive alliance.
On T8 Sp will DoW Arabia calling Turkey. Turkey will respond and do all of the work vs. the Arabians. Turkey will DoW Toscana calling Spain. Spain will take Luca (hopefully this turn) and Turkey will take Florence. If one or the other players is having difficulty then the other can help them. The goals is a level 5 peace and control of both Toscana cities.
Neither party will call the other to be involved in any other offensive war.
On T9, with mutual consent, Spain and Turkey can make further declarations.
*-*-*
T9 involved the Turks declaring war on the Toscanians and calling Spain and Spain declaring war on the Steppes and calling Turkey.
*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-* Royal Marriage in Paris, T9/1530 "The beautiful daughter of the King of Spain is married to the Dauphin of France. Fireworks in Paris!! Rumors say Franscois and Charles made some kind of treaty...." Treaty of Besancon: Spain and France sign Royal Marriage. Spain cedes Rousillon as dowry to France Spain and France sign an offensive alliance Starting turn 9 Spain and France sign a loan treaty in which France gives 75d$ to Spain this turn and 50d$ next turn. France recognizes the Spanish claim on the Papacy, Parma and Bavaria (i.e. no diplomacy on them this period). Other Christian nations are welcome to join this alliance. Dirk/France Adam/Charles/Spain/God-like Emperor
*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-* Treaty of Creta Turn 9 / 1530
The Great Nations of the Sublime Porte (Turkey) and the Serinissima Republic (Venice) do hereby join together in celebration at the announcement of the Marriage of an unnamed daughter of Doge Zorzi’s family to the wise and great Suliman the Lawgiver as his 4th official wife on the 15th of April in this year. (-2 stab each) This young lady will be allowed to live in the splendor of the Topkapi Palace harem for the rest of her life.
In addition to the taking on the burden of responsibility of care for the new wife, the Sultan will receive the small province of Creta from the Venetians.
The houses of Turkey and Venice shall be bound in a defensive alliance and a stipulated offensive alliance (whereby BOTH parties must agree to one or the other calling for an offensive war) for the next 10 years (2 turns).
Furthermore, to again tie the houses there will be another royal marriage (-2 stab each) sometime between 1540 and 1554 (on any of turns 11-13), whereby the dowry of Illyria will be give to Turkey. This will be by mutual consent, but if a decision is not reached before 1550 (turn 13) it will happen on turn 13.
To solidify these royal joinings, Turkey and Venice will not compete nor send privateers (including Barbary Pirates) after each other’s fleets. Turkey will not usurp any Venetian full monopolies, but may place trade fleets in the Ionian up to 3.
Also, to improve their trade relationship, while the Dynastic Alliance is in effect, Turkey will always send the Smyrna Convoy via the shortest possible route to Venetian territory. In addition, Turkey will receive a 10 Ducat subsidy from Venice each turn the Convoy is sent to Venice to help cover shipping costs, regardless of the actual amount received. This subsidy will be in effect for the entire time this treaty is in effect.
If not at war together, then neither Turkey nor Venice may aid the enemy against the other by providing supply, access, or transport.
If a Crusade is called, Venice will not join or if he does he will not pursue any combat with Turkey to include the above paragraph. In that case, Turkey will not pursue any Venetian forces or territory either.
Signed, Sultan Suliman the Lawgiver Doge Zorzi I the Merciful
*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-* Only fragmentary remains exist of this treaty, but top linguists and analysts have compare fragments of this most important treaty that started as a war of aggression by France and Spain against the League of Schmalken (Hesse, Hanover, Saxony, Thurigen, Wurtemburg) and extended to include England, Turkey, Venice, as well as, Algeria, Bavaria, the Crimea, the Hapsburgs, Latvia, Poland, and Savoia.
Treaty of Schmalken 1535/T10
Treaty included a combined attack on the Schmalken League and the ceding of Rousillion to France in a royal marriage. Unfortunately the war erupted in a large-scale war vs. Venice/Turkey. The treaty was a defensive and offensive alliance. Goal France: VP vs. minors of the league and money. Goal Spain, VP for reconversion. Treaty of Becancon was prolonged during the summit of Francois I and Carlos I (V) when they met this year in Aiges Mortes in southern France ( nice historical town in Provence where actually these adversaries accidentally met)...
It ended in a stalemate by the major powers France/Spain & Turkey/Venice after 15 years (three turns). Within the first five years (one turn), Fr/Sp conquered Hesse, Thurigen & Wurtemburg, and Poland was knocked out by Turkey and his minor allies. The next five years (one turn) sees England and Latvia ally with Turkey and Crimea against Poland again bringing it to peace. Turkey brings the Hapsburgs to peace also, but Fr/Sp finish off Hanover and Saxony and begin to strike Venice, who has meanwhile taken most of Southern Italy. The final phase (one turn) sees, a short campaigning season (3 round) and the holding out of the siege of Venice. Mutual exhaustion set in and Venice ceded Mantua to France in the peace, ending the war.
*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-* Treaty of Danzig T11 / 1540
Turkey and England sign an Offensive/Defensive Treaty vs. Poland only. If one or the other country declares war on or is attacked by Poland then he may call the other into the war.
On T11, Turkey will DoW Poland and call England. The goal will be for England to ultimately gain Danzig and Turkey to gain the other two choices from an unconditional peace.
Failure in any aspect of this agreement, barring both players’ consent, is considered a breach of alliance and entails all penalties of a breaking an alliance (-2 Stability and a temporary CB).
As with all agreements with Turkey, the calling of a Crusade will merely place the terms on hold, not abrogate them. The turn following the Crusade this agreement will again return to full force.
Sultan Suliman President Oliver Cromwell
*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-* Treaty of Illyria 1550/Turn 13
The Great Doge at Venice and the Sultan in Constantinople, cement their bonds with the marriage of the third niece of the Doge to the second nephew of the Sultan. (RM: -2 stab to each) As a dowry, the gracious Doge cedes Illyria to the Sultan. (-1stab to Ve)
Also, there is the obligatory Offensive/Defensive Alliances between Venice and Turkey.
Breaking this treaty will result in a -2 stab penalty and a CB versus the breaking party.
Doge Grimani Sultan Selim I
*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-* Holy League Treaty 1550/T13 France signs a defensive and offensive alliance with Venice, Portugal and Spain if these nations agree. At last The Holy League is formed. Calling in this league will only be done with mutual agreement.

The Little Kingdom Who Humbled the World
Watching the backs of the retreating French and Portuguese aggressors as they depart the little fiefdom of Tripolitania’s land, the Bey of Tripoli breathes a sigh of relieve. His small forces, augmented by advisors of his nominal lord, Sultan Selim I of the Ottomans in Istanbul, have cast out the hated crusading foreigners. The end of the fighting season and the poor results of the siege has conspired to force a retreat of the attackers.
Yet, the Bey’s good fortune does not end there. For in the ensuing months, the emissaries from the five-nation evil coalition have come groveling on their knees to the representative of the Bey, begging for peace and offering to pay his eminence in coin for any damage or discomfiture experienced during the misunderstanding.
The magnanimous Bey, though calculating the benefits of accepting such a womanly desire for peace declines such a silly offer. Instead removing the restraining hand of his liege, the Sultan, the Bey of Tripoli decides to bring Jihad to all of Western Europe. The name of Tripoli shall be upon all the lips of the infidels in Europe and his fame shall be spread throughout the land.
Inshallah! I have spoken Bey of Tripoli, Mustafa

*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-* Proclamation by the Sultan 1555/Turn 14
Oh vile Betrayer! Thou art Venice!
We have seen fit to allow you to live. We have refrained from crushing your greasy complexion into the mud of your home port. We have allowed you to dine at the foot of the table of kindness. And yet, how do you repay our magnanimity? By perfidy. You have organized the little christian fiefdoms to strike at innocent North African brothers and some other worthless ones of your kind who have run to our greatness for protection.
Oh, you have struck at our hand too often and now you must pay.
From this moment on the Smyrna Fleets will sail to other waters. From this moment on we will afflict the remnants of your land. We shall scourge you. We shall send your children and women into slavery as we consume your lands.
His Highness has spoken. Inshallah.
Sultan Selim I
*-*-*-*-*-*-* Venice Diplomacy 1560/Turn 15
To The impotent countries of France and Turkey The Doge of Venezia sends you this message. You have dared to declare war on the mighty country of Venezia. For this you shall pay dearly.
To begin with one would wonder how your two countries could ever join forces. For in the past France has attempted to destroy Turkey in any way or manner possible. Even by cowardly subversive actions. Yet Turkey now allies with them. A fitting alliance as both have no honor.
France claims that they are going to war to avenge the blood of soldiers lost in their last war with Venezia. This may be their war cry but the truth is the only reason that Venezia lost the last war was because of the inept armies of Turkey who fought with the skill and courage of little children.
The Doge of Venezia The master of Fate
*-*-*-*-*-* Response by France 1560/Turn 15
Reply to the Doge's treacherous call..
The Venetian nation has shown itself to be a treacherous one. Venice fights at Muslim, Catholic and Protestant side just what it sees fit. That has to end. Together with the mighty Sultan the French government takes the Holy responsibility to crush this evil regime before it can spread. Victory is certain, as our determination is strong. This war might be costly but justice will prevail!!! Alas!!
French newspaper.. Paris, January 1560
(This was done just after Venice switched to Holland and was no longer a player.)
