Are there supposed to be card backs for the game? I just d/led the files and looked at them quickly. Did I miss them or they just don't exist?

And no, these are not cardbacks, these are actual ship cards for the game. You might be happy to hear I am planning on putting a high quality prototype of the game onto TGC with all new layout and artwork. The new prototype will have some major chances, such as spaceships in the form of cards and not fiddly tokens. I will be done with the all cards version by tomorrow.
Would you be interested in buying a copy? If so I will publish it on TGC for everyone to see and buy.
And have you actually played the game? If so please send me any input you might have so I can get the best possible prototype out!

I have not played yet, just grabbed the files today. I will wait to see what you come up with there and check it out. I may be interested in buying one. Will have to check it out. I bought Twilight Imperium (third edition) today for less than I have in the print and play Dungeon Dwellers' Fantasy Boardgame! So perhaps waiting to see what you come up with isn't such a bad idea!
