...anyone know?
It says hand-painted, and there are some 250 minis in each game. 250 x 800 copies = 200 000 Minis.
That is a hell of a lot of Minis to paint!

I would suggest finding and watching Last Train Home, a documentary by Lixin Fang that relates the story of migrant factory labour in China. It's one of the best, IMHO, demonstrations of how the consumption of the west has redefined the lifestyle of the average Chinese worker.
I mention it as I imagine workers of this sort (clothing manufacturing is shown in the documentary) is exactly how it got painted.

Lets make an approximation..
Plain WOTR is approx $79 WOTR Collectors Ed is approx $350 , right?
The difference is $271, and there is approx 270 figures in the box, right?
So, if the publishers took $0 profit themselves, from the $271 extra price, someone got paid approx $1 per painted Mini.

Now, the only thing we need to find out , is how long time it takes to paint a Mini. Then we know the hourly wages

That's also assuming that the only upgrade from the two editions is the painted minis. There are many more improvements in addition to this that go into the added cost of the Collector's Edition. So, it becomes even less than $1 per mini after factoring in all that.

Not to mention that a dollar at retail represents far less than a dollar in production cost.

Yet some people still complain about the quality of some of the painting for the "huge" cost!

The math I used when justifying the purchase of this game went something like this:
Game & expansion - $80 Beautiful Box - $50 Map - $20 Rule Book - $25 Storage Trays - $35 Larger cards - $10 Hunt tile bag - $5 Subtotal: $225
Purchase cost: $364 (from Boards & bits, including shipping)
Balance for painting of figures: $139 $139/248 figures = $0.56/figure
There is no way I could paint these miniatures as good as they are at a personal cost (materials, time, and frustration) of $0.56 each.
I'm not saying any of my costs above reflect actual costs, but rather the value to me. The decision to buy became a no-brainer for me and the game quickly went from being an extravagant expense to being a great value.(though still expensive for "just a game")
I am so glad I bought this. Six plays so far, each one very different and exciting, and I haven't even added the expansion yet.

Yesterday I told my wife about the WOTR-CE, and the fact that the publishers had 200 000 Minis handpainted.
She suggested that we should paint and sell copies ourselves.
The copyright infringement aside, this statement is quite a good argument AGAINST such a stunt :
Balance for painting of figures: $139 $139/248 figures = $0.56/figure

Eeek! Half a million figures ..
For some reason, I get this picture in my head, where a single guy sits in front of there 500 000 figures, with one brush , painting furiously , while other guys are adding more figures to be painted all the time

I'll be honest and say i realised the quality of the minis was going to be garbage. Hence i replaced them all with my own painted from the original bowed sets. I pretty much knew i was going to do this though since i bought the game for everything else except the painted miniatures.

What's that?
Are you not happy with the painted figures?
I have only seen pictures here, but I think they look rather good. Xpt for the colorscheme of the Southrons. I mean , purple trousers ; how gay isnt that!

The only major complaint is that Galadriel is a knocked-up tart. (A minor complaint is that the gift figures are nearly identical to their counterpart/original, eg Aragorn vs Strider.)
All the horses are cool, everyone's shields and flags are detailed nicely, the orcs trolls and nazgul have nice aggression, the color coding along the bases is really helpful in setup, weighting/touch is good, it's clear that a lot of effort went into the details.
Aside from having to keep Galadriel's skirt down, I'm quite satisfied.

So does every game come with the box of 2 extra minis including Gandolph the Peach, or just the first wave?
Thanks,
