Sure, Turandot is a simple and quick game. This does not mean that there are no strategies involved in the game: by playing it several times you can easily identify them by yourself. In any case, let me give you some advice about the most important things to be kept in mind while playing Turandot.
1 - Keep track of money!: each player has three and only three money cards, and there is no way to replenish them. So, keep track of the money which is spent by each player and avoid saving it for the last pair of rounds (when everyone will most probably try to use it). A pair of good singers grabbed in the first rounds using the money could be very useful, expecially if you are building a preventive strategy related to the directors.
2 - A little bit of sexism: two women, four men: always keep in mind that the ideal team of singers should be composed by four male singers and two female singers. So, try to avoid getting too much female singers and remember that every singer covering a role which requires the opposite sex is worth minus one point. So, if it is your turn to act as tie-breaker keep this in mind and try to assign female singers over male singers: this will probably damage your opponents.
3 - When you have nothing to lose...: ...hire a costumist or a carpenter! Carefully check the selection of singers of the current round: if you think that no one of the singers will hurt your score if assigned to you by the tie-breaker player, try to go for an extra point by playing just money and hiring one of the two special characters (costumist of carpenter). Remember: your three money cards could easily become three extra points at the end of the game. That's a very good amount, considering that the winner of a game has usually three-four points of advantage over the other players. Also, if YOU are the owner of the Puccini card you can go for the special cards more easily.
4 - Before the director is hired...: the first times you play Turandot you may think that the first three rounds are a bit random, as you do not have hired a director yet. This is wrong. First, consider the points 1, 2 and 3 in this article and apply them to the first three rounds to maximize your score. Then, remember that the number of different directors in Turandot is nine (9). So, after a pair of games you should have learned their modifiers and you can actually hire singers trying to be prepared to the director selection phase. For instance, four of the directors like or dislike some kind of singers, so it could be not so much useful to grab opposite types of singers if you have the choice to avoid this. Remember: Turandot is NOT a random game: the only random part of the game is the draw of the sets of singers. Apart from this, every player's choice will have a straight impact over their own score (and, of course, over opponent scores).
That's it. Thanks a lot for reading!
