My on-line time is very limited at the moment. Working away from home and hotel t'internet service still under review.
I'll try to post more details of what I have planned this coming weekend. A lot will depend on numbers but the general structure and theme is already formulating nicely...

This will be my fourth straight Memoir tournament held at the UK Games Expo and in every one of the previous years I have tried to make the event both open to new (novice) players and a challenge to veterans. I do this by making use of all of the expansion packs to give players the variety of scenarios covering the Eastern, Pacific and Mediterranean theatres as well as the 'standard' Western Front scenarios from the base game. The latter tend to be less 'complex', not that Memoir could ever really be considered difficult in wargame terms, but newer players can sometimes feel overwhelmed by some of the additional rules the expansions include. I therefore try, where possible, to allot the new players one of the western Front scenarios for their first round. This helps to build their confidence with the game mechanics before attempting the slightly more involved 'expansion' scenarios and I always make sure I'm around to help with any questions / clarifications.
I hope to make this year's event just as challenging to the veterans but every bit as open to players totally new to the game.

I have received some questions regarding format of the tournament and expansion game-set requirements.
Here is my reply...
The tournament is solo and not team play. The format depends on the total number of players but I tend to structure the event into two distinct sections. The first preliminary rounds (morning and early afternoon) we split the participants (randomly) into two groups. One group takes the role of the Allies and plays all the preliminary rounds as the Allied side in each scenario against a different Axis opponent, recording their scores for each round. Players are then ranked in order of their group to find the highest ranked Allied player and the highest ranked Axis player. This way you are actually competing against your fellow group members. I use this format because it helps to equalise the imbalance in many of the scenarios. It doesn't matter if you play a scenario that particularly favours the Axis player since you are trying to beat the respective scores of all the other Allied players that play the same scenario rather than your Axis opponents. At the end of the preliminaries, normally 3 or 4 rounds, we then rank all the players with the top Allied and Axis player playing in a final round to determine the overall winner. This last round is the same scenario played twice with each player taking both Allied and Axis sides and the aggregate score over the two games determining the winner. Likewise all other ranks play off to determine the rankings for the event. Players can always skip this last stage if they'd rather spend time looking around the Expo but I have to say that in my previous 3 tournaments we have yet to have anyone drop out. Everyone seems to enjoy themselves to the point that they want to compete to the end to earn their tournament placing rank. As for the scenarios played I do tend to mix and match between all the expansions. Don't worry about bringing copies, I have more than enough to cover our requirements and if we have a scenario with rules you're not familiar with I will be available to get you up to speed with any key differences. I often include one with air rules but leave it to the players' own discretion on whether they use the rules or just play without. There will be at least one Eastern Front, Mediterranean and one Pacific Theatre scenario (as well as the base game) for you to play so you get a good variety and it helps many players to try these expansions for the first time. I follow exactly the same format for the C&C Ancients event since the same often applies to balance for the scenarios. Let me know if you have any further questions.

Only 3 places left at the table!
If you're thinking about trying you'd better get a hurry on.
Thanks to all for signing up - it makes my task just a tad easier knowing the number well in advance.
Keep watching. Some scenario details soon...

Tournament Scenario
A Memoir tournament planned for the early part of June without a beach scenario just wouldn't seem 'right'!
So this year we'll be joining the Canadians as they hit the Atlantic wall at Juno...
I'll use this as the introductory scenario for any new players since it has fairly limited units and terrain but still has enough to challenge the more discerning player...
Features: Beach movement Bridges Bunkers Hedgehogs Rivers Temporary Objective hexes Wire

One remaining slot left.
Thanks to all that have signed up. I hope you will enjoy the day as much as we have in the past.
I really need to complete the 16 - yes I could play myself but my experience tells me we always have a no-show so I need to be the reserve - There must be one last person tempted to take the plunge, come on, dive in, you won't regret it.
[Note: whoever takes the last place will receive a nice (little) gaming pressie courtesy of yours truly]

Hi Phil (and Charlie)
Glad that you both enjoyed the day. This year's new room made the event even better and gave us plenty of space with an interesting view over the busy Warrick Suite. I'll post some pictures, courtesy of Sean Wenlock, just as soon as I can find the necessary time to get them uploaded. I'll be putting up the tourney results here in due course but there won't be any AARs. Unfortunately I didn't have the time during the day to watch any of the games close enough to do them justice.
