Have you guys noticed that a lot of newer games (dungeon twister, dungeonquest, ravenloft, etc) are including solo play? Being a solo gamer I love it when games come out with true solitaire rules (not fanmade). Anyway, I hope this continues with as many games as possible.

Yes, I have noticed it.... It was a little bit difficult to find good solo games a couple of years back. Now, there are plenty to choose from. THAT IS GREAT!

I think it is great when games have this option. Especially dungeon-crawls!

Don't forget the Space Hulk card game which has solo rules.
I love the solo play aspect. I'm currently looking to get a dungeon crawl game and Ravenloft's solo play option is the only reason I don't own Descent yet.

The challenge is in finding a solo play game that is more fun than playing video games. I've tried several and so far I'd rather just play video games (though I'd reather play boardgames with a group than video games by myself).

Yeah, it seems to be trendy these days. Along with the overused 'easy to learn, hard to master', and 'playable in one hour'.

That is a really good point you bring up. Though I love video games for some reason I love solo boardgames just as much (and sometimes more). Especially when it comes to dungeoncrawlers. Id much rather roll dice and move minis/counters that play on a console.
Anyone else feel the same?

I'm also very happy about all the solo potential happening. My eyes are currently on Castle Ravenloft, DungeonQuest and Hornet Leader: Carrier Air Operations because of all the solo potential.
About the video games: I find the same thing, I do enjoy playing video games, but there's nothing like a good board game. I wonder if it's partly pacing - with a board game you can control the tempo of action, savoring certain moments as you choose, whereas with most video games your "tempo" and pacing is usually dictated by the game. This may sound odd, but there also the fact that you can eat and drink at leisure while playing a board game, and you're also not getting pelted by electromagnetic radiation, which could be some kind of weird factor in how you feel afterwards. In any case, interesting topic...

First off,the solo play is a plus but generally they are still not as good as games designed specifically for solo play.It is still a plus though and I'm all for it.Secondly, yes,I've been playing video/console/PC games for decades and nothing compares to the board game experience for me,for all the reasons just mentioned in previous threads.I started with war games, long ago,and now I play most any types.Waitin' on DungeonQuest,Space Hulk card game and possibly Ravenloft.

If you're not getting pelted by electromagnetic radiation, how on earth are you able to even see the board?

I think it is great also. When I see a game I am interested in, the first thing I consider is who can I play it with? I do have a few people to play games with, but their interest is not as broad as mine. If a game has a viable solo option, it is a huge plus, as I know if it doesn't appeal to those people, I can still play it.
In the end, it helps sell games. I recently bought Thunderstone, because it has a viable solo option. I plan to play it with other people, but I know it won't go unplayed if I can't arrange that. Also, I didn't have to wait around to play it the first time. I was able to dive right in by myself.

These are really great points (except for the radiation stuff :) There is something to be said for the anticipation when you are low on hit points and have one shot to roll a "hit" or get ripped to shreds by an orc. I love RPG's on consoles but it is much less gratifying when you just press a button over and over. I dunno, though. It may have something to do with my age (34) and that I was brought up on pen and paper rpg's and boardgames.
I wonder if there are as many teen and twenty-somethings that prefer solo boardgames to video games.

Computer games are great....but I can't take them to work and they don't work without power. Solo boardgames, I can take to work, and can play them at lunch without power.
Each type of game can find it's right moment to play, and right environment. Bring on more solo games please.

If you want a solo game that will give your mind a challenge get Dungeon Twister 2: Prison. The solo rules are top notch and it has a difficulty adjuster built into the game. I cannot tell you how many hours i have spent playing against it and always come back for more.

I've thought about that game and would love to try it, but I'm pretty much past the days of buying games to play solo. I've bought so many games because they had solo play available: Castle Panic, Catan Dice, Hero Immortal King, Ingenious Travel, Mage Knight Dungeons, Red November, Thunderstone, Agricola, Race for the Galaxy (+ 1st expansion), Ghost Stories, etc.
I've had fun playing several of those, but none of them were worth buying for solo play (except maybe Ghost Stories). I've just rarely been satisfied with solo play in board games. On the other hand I've had countless hours of fun playing PC games like World of Warcraft, Starcraft, Baldur's Gate, Icewind Dale, etc.

Besides the upcoming Ravenloft and Space Hulk card-games we now have a solo/co-op LOTR LCG to look forward to...
