Okay, the blog Kitchn had a post about Toastabags.

These are silicone bags that you can use to toast items in your toaster.

Now, I'm bad about gadgets, I get so tempted by them! I thought that this would be handy because I am always looking for ways to avoid heating up the kitchen.

Then, it struck me that I could use parchment paper the same way. Parchment paper (as opposed to wax paper) is made to go in the oven.

So, I decided to try it! I wrapped a slice of leftover pizza in parchment paper and popped it in the toaster. I stood ready to snatch the toaster from the counter and run screaming into the yard should there be a fire. That turned out not to be necessary.

It worked perfectly!! The pizza was delicious! It was crispy and toasty--much better than the microwave, obviously!

So, I tried again the next day. Miss Turtle Artist loves popcorn shrimp.

So....

I assembled the shrimp on a sheet of paper.

Folded it up

Clearly this is a potential fire, so I watched it carefully.

Yes, the paper got mighty brown, but it worked like a charm.

NEXT it was time for a tomato/mozzarella sandwich!!

YUM!!!

What will be next???

Awesome idea.

I always use our Foreman grill for grilled cheese, and it occurred to me that this "grill" is really just a toster on its side. The parchment paper makes turning the toaster on its side unnecessary!

You know, you can buy these things called "Toaster Ovens" that are pretty much the same thing on its side so you don't need the parchment.

I think this is very inventive of you, Jess. And brave.

For the record, toaster ovens take up more space on the counter (and I have precious little extra space), and also are one more thing to spend money on (many of us have precious little of that to spend on such mundane things when we'd rather buy books, music, or g****).

Superb!

I have one of these:

It's an outstanding way to cook many, many things. Steaks, chicken breasts, you name it. But it's also overkill for things like your toasted tomato sandwich. My son is gonna love it when I make him one panini-style.

You've almost worked your way to en papillote. Just make it water-tight and poach some salmon in it! And toast it for ten minutes.

But the toaster oven is used for the FIMO clay hardening and other craft projects, so it's a bad idea to put food in there as well. The toaster is food-exclusive (for now).

That's emplying that your reuben is closed-faced instead of open. Anyone eats a reuben like that near me gets punched in the face. Sorry Dave, that means you too.

True. I would agree: open-faced > closed-faced reuben...

However: closed-faced reuben > no reuben...

Therefore: open-faced > closed-faced reuben > no reuben.

JUDGE: So let me get this straight. You punched this man in the face... for eating a sandwich?

STEVE: It was a closed-face reuben! A closed-face reuben!

JUDGE: This court finds you guilty of battery and sentences you to one year in prison. *bangs gavel*

(Note: I'm not a lawyer. I don't know whether the legal terms I just used are correct, and I'm not familiar with what sentences are appropriate for such crimes. It was just a joke. If you feel the urge to get all pedantic on me, just let it go.)
