When you defeat a monster, the controlling player discards the card into the "Heroes' Experience Pile." I can't tell, is this one pile for all heroes? And then if a hero wants to cancel a card or level up, he just takes from the pool (whether or not he contributed)?

One shared pile (otherwise it would say "Hero's Pile")...

Oh. One pile for all heroes? Man, that would have changed how we played yesterday quite a bit. We were deliberatly setting up kills to spread XPs around so we'd all have the most multiple of 5 XPs possible.

That would certainly make things harder

At gen con 2010 Mike Mearls was asked regarding cancelling an encounter for 5 xp. Can the players pool their xp to make 5 xp needed and Mike Mearls said "exactly"
So this must mean that players keep their own xp piles.
