After a few weeks hiatus, the episode that you've been waiting for is now available. Derk and I spoke with Reiner Knizia on Saturday night and on into Sunday morning. We covered his early years with his banking career and the transition to becoming a full-time game designer. We also go in-depth into the theme and creation of Euphrat & Tigris, Lord of the Rings, and Durch die Wuste. We get some personal tidbits such as his favorite movies and favorite word and curse word...sorta. Also, we've got a great Ted Cheatham review of Zendo, and we finish up with a modified hook Derk and I had a blast doing the show and thank Reiner Knizia for taking time out of his busy schedule to talk with us geeks.

147 Minutes.

Cool! I'm glad this is a long one. I half expected him to busy and require a stricter schedule. I can't wait to hear it. Are you relieved now that it is over?

Out of curiosity, what happened to the episode with Jay from Rio Grande Games? Was looking forward to that, and wondered if it was put off temporarily/indefinitely...

That's still coming up... While moaning in discomfort this last week, we had to postpone the show with Jay, and gladly he's agreed to re-schedule for a slightly later week...

I think this episode is one of our better ones. My microphone was slightly off kilter and I didn't notice it till the end, so I sound miles away... *sigh*

But Reiner sounds great!

Re: GeekSpeak #18 - Reiner Knizia
I just want to say that I really liked the parts where Dr. Knizia was talking in depth about how the games developed, and especially on the theme of E&T (Fawkes I'm sure is feeling validated today :) ). Definitely keep this sort of discussion in mind when you talk to other designers, it was very interesting.

Love all the geekspeaks, but this one was especially nice. And THANK YOU for cutting the files so each was under 80 minutes for those few lost souls among us (such as myself) who aren't technically inclined :)

Good Geekspeak -- Reiner is, if anything, even more German than I had ever imagined.

I won't hear it until tonight. For those who remember, how did the E&T insight compare to the 6 boardroom episodes he did on E&T:

I hadn't heard of 'The Boardroom" before - and that link no longer leads to any archived episodes. Anyone know where I can find them?

Re: GeekSpeak #18 - Reiner Knizia
First thanks for geekspeak, Ted does a great review and Reiner was fantastic. Now for my candid opinion...

I think this was a great episode when Derk was not trying to be funny. Here you have one of the most prolific game designers, someone who has more passion for creating games than most people have for playing them and you feel that you need to insult him and dumb down the interview with cheap comments and snide remarks. Or are they just poor attempts at humor, like picking on Canadian's in each episode? Where is Aldie? The only time he seems to get the mike is when he asks if it's his turn at the end of the show for his part of the "hook". I think there needs to be a little more balance between the two of you on the show.

I am not trying to troll here, I am provding my honest opinion from someone who has listened since the first show and will continue to listen. Your always asking for feedback, I hope you take this for what it is.

I have to agree with Owen: Derk's attempts at humour were often completely lost on the good doctor. It seemed to confuse him and put him on the defensive.

I will listen to this episode, it is the first Geek Speak I will attempt to listen to. I hope to finally find out my one burning question.

Do Germans REALLY love David Hasselhoff?

I hope Dr. Knizia answers to this, and much much more.

For the record, I think Derk is funny -- when the guest gets the joke. I do agree, there were a few uncomfortable moments in this one where Reiner doesn't seem to know how to respond.

Also, more f-bombs please. ;)

Re: GeekSpeak #18 - Reiner Knizia
Yeah, I just listen to the whole show and I don't really think Dr. Knizia was ever "insulted". Nor do I think Derk needs to completely tone down his natural way of acting or speaking.

Reiner Knizia is self admittedly a more serious and driven man than 99% of the rest of us. That doesn't mean he's a humorless robot that needs to be handled with kidd gloves. He may not get every joke, he may not think all of them are funny, and the language barrier may be tough with American idioms to the English language - but he wouldn't be as successful as he is today if he wasn't able to function very well with a fairly wide variety of people.

Relax.

Derk and Aldie, nice job, very enjoyable episode.
