I enjoyed this (on first play) with 4 but thought it could work OK with more. Maybe 5 without any rule changes. Am I missing something?
The only constraints that I see are the ship limits. Each player would have fewer turns and it would also probably be more luck-based, since the board would change more between one person's turns.
As a light game for 5 or even 6 is there a reason I'm missing to not go above the recommended number?

Well, the game already is quite chaotic with four players, but if you don't mind that, I suppose it might work with five. The biggest problem I see is that there will be fewer opportunities to convert your shells into victory points.
