Most attacks won't succeed unless you are second player on the hourly turn you move your blocks up to the frontline, and then you are first player on the next hourly turn.

It is purely a matter of the dice whether you are first or second player.

The point of the following variant is that commanders could increase the tempo of their operations, at a cost of greater disorganization.

Variant:

On Day 1 & Day 2, the Northern player may modify his first initiative dice roll by reducing leaders' steps. After the Northern player's option to reduce his leaders' steps, the Southern player may do so. On Day 3, the Southern player reduces steps first, the Northern player second.

If there is a tied dice roll, then apply no modifier to the following tie-breaking dice rolls. Only the first initiative dice roll is modified.

A dice roll modifier of +2 or -2 is produced by reducing Lee or Meade 1 step.

A dice roll modifier of +1 or -1 is produced by:

1) reducing a Southern corps commander 1 step, or reducing two Northern corps commanders 1 step; or

2) reducing two Southern division commanders 1 step, or reducing four Northern division commanders 1 step.
