Some of my friends were disappointed that if you get a dud hand and can't pick the rule, you're kinda hosed that round. All my favorite trick-taking games let you bid on the strength of your hand, so here's a variant.
Flip up 2 (or 3?) quest cards. Going clockwise and starting with whoever got the blue 5, you can bid or pass (you must bid over previous bids). Once you pass, you're out. Keep going around until all but one players pass. That player subtracts his bid from his score (possibly going negative, or more negative than before), and picks one rule from any available on any of the revealed quest cards. If all players pass, the person with the blue 5 picks the rule without losing any points.
What do you guys think?
I'd also be curious about the idea of team rules, like Euchre/Spades...
