I am one of that sad breed which plays 99% of Board Games by myself.

I am aware of all the solo thematic games which are out there (Arkham Horror, Mage Knight, Elder Sign, Gears of War, Death Angel etc.).

I am also aware that a large number of games (Battlestar Galactica, Game of Thrones, Horus Heresy and more) are really not that suitable as a solo experience.

But i am also awarethat there is a third category, which is where my interest lies: Games which do not come with solo rules, but have either an official or fan-made variant, which:

a) makes for a very, very good game (most importantly)
b) is so good, that you would consider buying the game just for solo play on the strength of that variant
c) can be learnt reasonably easily without playing multiplayer games

Very grateful for views, and I hope that others will find this thread interesting.

Many Thanks

Not sad if you enjoy the playing. Everyone needs some alone time. Why not use some of it in pursuit of a favorite hobby?

Here's a GeekList of solitaire games that BGGeeks love. Some are the multiplayer-games-also-great-for-solitaire that you're looking for.

The solo game on my table right now is Magic Realm. It's designed for up to 16 players, but it works fine by oneself. Long setup time and thick rule book are the downsides. Very immersive and challenging, though.

Keep having fun.

Thanks for the link to your list and all, but a lot of the games on there are either not thematic, have official solo play rules as standard, or are the kind of games which lose a lot in solo mode (i.e. battlestar galactica)

I really wanted to get suggestions specifically for games which are not designed to be played solo, but can actually be played solo really well with some minor (or major) tweaks.

And you already know about the SoloPlay GeekList, right?

Maybe those games aren't thematic enough, though. If that's the case, I'll stick with my suggestion of Magic Realm.

That and most wargames, which are routinely played solitaire just by playing both sides against each other and enjoying the show.

Besides the terrific co-op games (Defenders of the Realm, Yggdrasil, Castle Panic, Forbidden Island, & Flash Point: Fire Rescue), these are some I enjoy playing "schizolo":

Navegador
Egizia
Troyes
Vikings
Glen More
Tribune
Feudality
Ascension
Don Quixote
Fortune and Glory
Blue Moon City
Alien Frontiers
K2

By "schizolo," I mean that I set up the game for 2-5 players, depending on mood, and play each player's turn to the best of my ability. When more than one good move is an option, I roll a die to determine which move to take. (Except for the player I am actually playing.)

I have had my eye on WoW for some time.

I managed to pick up a copy and quite enjoyed my first playthrough. It was more fun than my first playthrough of Arkham Horror. Time will tell which one is more fun over time.

What variant are you playing for solo? Do you set up the enemy faction as well or just ignore PvP altogether?

Me too! Although now I discover the possibilities of playing by email on VASSAL. But still playing much Space Hulk - Death Angel and Runebound solo.

I second this! Also all expansions of Runebound are great solo, using these rules:

The latest expansion, Mists of Zanaga, is not in this document, but it also plays very well solo.

Also these geeklists offer more information.

When I used to play Runebound, I played all of them solo.

Nearly all of the Doom games I've played have used a solo variant to handle the alien's action. I used to play Descent first edition with others, but the people I played with moved. I still play Descent these days using a variant I made up (a variation of some of the solo variants that are in the forums). The same goes for Battlelore. I lost my opponent, but a very simple variant is to play one side and then draw 2 cards for the opposing side and play it advantageously.

Besides Arkham Horror, you can play other coops solo like Ghost Stories, Flash Point,Yggdrasil, and Defenders of the Realm. You can do Shadows Over Camelot solo if you don't do the traitor.

Check out that geeklist for solo variants of non-solo games. Several of them are pretty good - even unlikely games like Fury of Dracula.

Victory Point Games has some solo fantasy and scifi games.

Yep. Long before I discovered wargames though, I was playing things
like Sorry and Monopoly solo. I don't understand the need for special
solo rules - they tend to turn the game into some sort of puzzle.

Try these:

-Operation Tannhäuser
-Space Hulk ( I guess your pseudonym tells us you have already played..)
-Incursion and SNAFU expansion (adds some really good solo stuff!)
-Victoria Cross 2
-Hour of Glory
-Mansions of Madness

All thematic and two-player games, but can be played solo very well. Rules can be found on BGG.

What solo rules do you play with Doom .... I've been looking for a solo Doom variant along the lines of Gears of War. I want to play two player cooperative with my son against the monsters ;-)

I liked playing Agricola and Bios Megafauna solo.
Because my favorite game eclipse lacked solo rules I made a variant myself
(invasion 2, in the files section of eclipse rise of the ancients and an older version in the files section of the core game).

a quick search brought up opinions that solo play wasn't very good w/ MoM. do you have a link regarding enjoyable solo play of MoM?

also, anyone know if Descent 2 can be soloed?
