I'm taking the 40k plunge and have narrowed down my choice of armies to either Grey Knights or Black Templars. All is good with the GKs AFAIK, they're a newer army with no compatibility issues for the 5th edition rules. The Black Templars have an older codex that pre-dates 5th edition. Are the BTs still compatible with 5th edition as their own force without being generic Space Marines? Is the 2005 BT codex still a valid document and are all older codices that have not had a 5th edition revision still usable?

If playing at a game store or tournament, you cannot use the older codex.

So as a general rule only codices published after 5th edition are legal?

No, the current/'old' Black Templar codex is still legal. Having said that, I think the current rumor is that the BT's will be getting a new codex sometime this year.

Glad to help. I still have about 1000pts worth of Black Templars that went on hold when someone at my store said it was the only army they owned. We never played - I should have finished mine anyway!

Great to be painting again.

I'm still playing Black Templars but Grey Knights are getting far more support in 5th edition... Currently building a new Cheesy Grey Knights army.
