I have a Mahjong set made of hard plastic (?) that looks like this:

I love the feeling of shuffling those tiles around. Is there a similar set for XiangQi out there? With or without the western letters.

My Xiang Qi set is made of Bakelite and I got it really cheap in Chinatown.

I think that's what your Mahjong set is probably made of as well. Anyway, if you have a Chinatown somewhere near you, check it out and you might find a set.

Good luck!

That is extraordinarily unlikely. They are almost certainly polypropylene or polyurethane.

Ah, well, maybe you're right.

They just feel very much like Bakelite but I've never actually performed a smell test.

Maybe when I get a chance, I'll check this afternoon.

I've got a nice set of Poly tiles with Bamboo backs.

Edit: I was talking about my Mahjong set, not Chinese Chess. My Bad.

I live in a small Swedish town so no luck there.

Do you have any pictures to show?

I'll bet it is melamine resin. My set from China (that my wife got me) it just that. Similar to Bakelite, but not quite as dense.

Do a Google search on "melamine chinese chess" and you should find something suitable. Get a good wood board - if you just get the pieces you probably get a thin cheap paper fold up board that won't last the first spill/sneeze.

Yes, there are such sets! But they seem to be rather hard to find.

I found mine years ago on eBay, but have not seen another since that time. These photos show my set on a nicely matching vinyl roll-up board that I found:

cool
