My older brother and i played the "Who has the ring?" variant, last night
I was FPP and won, spectacularily not only due to the ring variant.
The link above explains the intricacies of the variant, but for now i'd like to discuss the combat bonuses of actually having a fighting-ring-bearer in a battle.
Here's my ideas: Plus one action die (even if the wielder is a COTW) added to the combat strength of the army the ring bearer is in, to a maximum of five. The FPP may pick any two of the cambat cards played by the SP during the last turn, and can use them to his advantage. With cards that require nazgul leadership, the ringbearer has nazgul leadership equal to his level to do this. These shadow cards cannot be played as event cards (obvioulsy, because the FPP wouldn't want to muster shadow units!).
(this is what the variant says, the downloadable file, my older bro explained it to me) Also, every turn, whether or not the ringerbearer is in combat, the FPP takes (before the roll for the turn) an action from the shadow player. The FPP can take one SP die a turn to a maximum of SP dice equal to the ring bearer's level. If an eye is rolled, all SP dice are returned to the SP and the ring bearer cannot move or attack for that turn. SP dice bearing the muster icon can be used to resurrect FPP units from the casualty pool.
These rules above didnt affect the game played last night as much as hoped. Aragorn, who was naturally chosen because of high level, did reduce the SP to four dice at one point (Saruman and the Witch king had both been killed the same turn before). But his inadequacy due to inactivity: (If an eye is rolled by the FPP, the ringbearer cannot move or attack) proved him at most times, useless. Book of Marzipan (marzazibul) read the dwarves and a reluctant-Legolas all the way to Mount Gundabad, killing all but one Elite. I had hoped that i would be resurecting everyone, but the lack of muster dice on my stolen shadow dice proved otherwise. Boromir and a force of 6R, and 4E marched through Moria, Lorien (recapture), Isengard, Helm's Deep, and Edoras, killing the Witch King and 26 units on the way.
This is a normal game for me.
The only ring-related advantages was the turn when the SP had four dice. BUT BUT BUT BUT BUT BUT, the SP could be reduced to this in a normal game by rolled-eyes going into the hunt pool.
All in all, hardly any difference felt. However, my combat alterations to the ring bearer when he is in battle could turn the war in our favour "And give Captain Daniel a chance to prove his quality..."

Note that under the normal rules, dead minions (Saruman, WK, Mouth) stay dead.
