Never trust the brute-force power of a computer network to do the job of a combinatorialist.

Here is a scan of the Dominion: Dark Ages boxcover. This comes from an advertisement in Spielbox 2012 Issue #2:

Edited to replace the scan with the image from RGG

The game itself isn't important. Spending time intellectually jousting with likeminded folks is the real reason to game.

I had assumed that since it had 500 cards that it would be a standalone. The blurb on the bottom says it is not standalone. So... why 500 cards?

So we get even more Kingdom cards. There might be something totally new that we won't guess, like the Prizes from Cornucopia, but just assuming normal counts that 500 could be 8 new Victory cards and 36 new non-Victory. And that's way more interesting than another set of basic supply cards that we could buy separately anyway (when they ever get released).

I think I recall hearing that we'd get 50 kingdom cards in this box. Seriously.

Once the common cards are out for Dominion, Dark Ages might as well be standalone. Combined with the common cards it would probably be the biggest bang for your buck or at least the biggest bang for your boxes.

Doesn't seem as busy as previous covers. I recall when the Prosperity boxcover was revealed we could scour it for ideas of what the cards might be. In this case, I can only imagine a "Barbarian," a "Ruins," and maybe a "Redneck Tree."

Not to forget the "Fern"...

I'm still trying to figure out whether it's the tree or the fern that causes the "Barbarian's" anger...

I'm trying to figure out the flavor text.

The ages have become dark. Lighter than those particularly dark ages, but much darker than the light ages you saw not too long in the past. Dark.

And something about waffles.

That reminds me, Donald needs to ask John Scalzi to write the flavor text for one of these expansions. Dark Ages would have been perfect, John could have written it in the style of the prologue to one of his novels.

LARPers from the future invade antiquity. They use their mind powers to effect localized season changes, destroying the olive oil and wine industries. The economic fallout causes the collapse of both society and sacred marble temples. So begin the Dark Ages...

I can definitely see the possibility of a Village Ruins card, but it probably wouldn't be a victory.
