We had 2 spare wooden pegs with rounded tops (like cribbage pegs with a small wheel on top), one red and one blue. We use them to simulate the barrels being thrown down by Donkey Kong and the fire going up.
Whenever a barrel result happens on the spinner, the barrel (blue) drops 1 level, starting from Donkey Kong and Pauline and ending at the bottom.
If the barrel lands on a Mario's level, spin the spinner again. If it comes up as a barrel, that Mario falls back to the bottom and has to start climbing again. If there are more than one Mario's on that level, each Mario must spin the spinner.
When the barrel makes it to the bottom, it catches fire and starts working it's way back up the tower (using the same rules as when it went down).
Mario's may climb up to a level that has a barrel on it without penalty, but if the barrel is burning, they must also make a spin to see if they fall, even if they climbed up to the burning barrel's level.
That's it. It's a fun variant for you to try.
