Good question. Frankly, I don't quite see the point of placing them facedown - it's not that hard to remember who was killed where. There's nothing in the rules that prevents me from taking notes, anyway. No reason to put an aspect of Memory into the game.
On the other hand, that means that the "peeking" solution is no problem, either - if you've been paying attention during the game, the first marker you turn should be of the correct type. Or you might see it as an opportunity to look under the markers, which your opponent can't do. (But maybe he's winning anyway if he's just killed the 4th unit of a class).
Maybe we'll just put that on the list for the next bunch of questions to Rob. Guess there is really no point in placing them facedown. Maybe during mechanic design there have been some ideas which got dropped, leaving the facedown-part in the rules unrecognized.
