Any thoughts on building interest for a game event focused on one game? Ideally to support a tournament?
I also think you CAN use tournaments to build interest, but not annually. If you did bi monthly or quarterly events around your game in question, including tournaments. But an annual mid-scale tourney is not exactly the way to build a community.
you guys sure did review some stinkers on this one. but the reviewapalooza was great. I liked the look back on talisman, I enjoy hearing opinions about old games, even if they're games i know about. I like the longer length of these, if that's any consolation for eric's editing time.
Ive been having thoughts of doing exactly this for a new game im creating. After the prototypes are created I plan on throwing a weekend of competitions at the local venue/comic shops.
The competition will have a sort of fred savage The Wizard appeal with it being "A game youve never played before!" The local game groups are a perfect target audience to see if I can drum up 24 people per competition. 10$ entry fee , Rewards for 1st and 2nd and possibly a small dice bag with dice for an entry gift.
Essentially its just to get the name and buzz out there while supporting the local comic shops.
People will pay to enter a tournament for a game that they already love.
For a new game that you are trying to advertise through tournaments having to pay will reduce your numbers dramatically. You won't get any of the people who hear about it and say "might as well". I think you need to treat this as marketing, with games for sale at the event to cover costs.
You both are most likely right. Having a day to come play a new game for free with gift bags would be fun with a small out of pocket cost, then offer tournament signups for a competition later in the day...
You are so right, having games to sell at the free play day would definitely be the best plan of action. Good thing there are plenty of game groups and comic shops in the greater Sacramento area.
