I've been given permission by Eric Goldberg, designer of this excellent game, to make available the English paste-ups and files that I've created. This article covers how to go about getting them:

1) Get a copy of the German edition, published by Edition Erlkonig.

2) Email me directly - these files will NOT, by request of the author, be available on the web - they will only be available from me.

3) I will ask you a question designed to check that you do, in fact, own the game. Again, this is by request of the author.

4) Once you answer the email, sit back and wait for a zip file to arrive in your inbox that contains the following:

- Formatted Book of Tales
- Edited and formatted Rules
- English player boards and main boards
- English reaction matrices
- English card paste-ups
- English map paste-ups
- English counter paste-ups

In other words, all you need to anglicize your copy of the game and start enjoying the wonderful theme and flavour of the Arabian Nights!

A quick final note: Credit where credit is due. Sterling Babcock, one of the first to get my files, has updated the map paste-ups as well as the various boards. So, in the interest of making the best available, Sterling's upgraded files will be included instead of my originals. Enjoy!

It is good that this is becoming available! As Patrick indicated, I put a fair amount of work into improving his paste ups and files. This included scanning the board and making photoshopped labels that matched the board, reformatting the player aids, and counters. I do not know if Patrick is using my formatted reaction matrixes or his.

I also created some other aids, including a player aid with answers on the reaction matrix for quick reference. But that is not strictly necessary. The one other thing I did was I remade all the cards in English. However, you can just use the labels on the cards that Patrick has.

Patrick did a fine job of translation. I am glad I was able to help to improve his work.

If you want to see the results, come play Tales of the Arabian Nights at BGG.CON!

I think that Erlkonig isn't selling the game anymore (their license expired in 2004).

That may be, but there are still retailers selling copies.

Are there any differences in the content of the Book of Tales compared to the one in the original, English, West End Games edition?

Also, any updating of the rules book?

Yes, the book of tales was updated a fair amount, fleshing out the paragraphs so to speak, making it more gender equivalent, and adding new paragraphs and one new place of power.

I do not know about the rulebook.

The rulebook in the German edition seems fairly similar to the original. In comparison, the original English rules seemed to encapsulate things in much briefer and better fashion than the english translation of the German rules. 6 pages to learn enough start the game instead of 16!!

The rules also explain things a little more. Useful for rules clarifications but this game begs for houserules. :D

Patrick and Sterling,

I'd just like to thank both of you for all your efforts in translating and/or making the English files available for this awesome game. The translation files arrived today, and just in time--my gaming group has been chomping at the bit to play Arabian Nights again!
