After leaving Gamewire, I was very pleasantly surprised, more like stunned, at the avalanche of support and thanks for the work I did. Since then I've been considering what my next move is, whether to try continue doing news about gaming in another forum or do something else.
The outpouring of support has convinced me to give it another go! Along with Greg Schloesser, Tom Vasel, Patrick Korner, Ryan Bretsch, Ward Batty and a number of other gamers, I'll be creating a new site that will feature daily news about games, a Gone Cardboard-like list of new releases, previews, reviews, special features like convention reports, and much more.
I have plans to go beyond what I did at Gamewire and include more features and more writers. With so many games now being published in so many different countries, I also hope to make the site more international.
Here are a few particulars about the site. It will be completely independent, meaning it won't be hosted by a game store like Gamewire was. This means that it will have to support itself and I have a number of thoughts on how that can happen. Everyone will have access to the content, but subscriptions will be sold for a token amount (like $20 a year) that will allow subscribers to comment on weblogs and news stories along with perhaps some other perks. Contributions will be accepted via a button on the site. There will also be advertising. I hope to make advertising a positive thing on the site - a place where the publishers or game stores can promote the games we all know and love. Note that these methods of supporting the site are not written in stone, things may change depending on the situation.
So when is this all going to happen? I hope to have the site up before the end of November.
I can tell you that I'm very excited about this. I'm very much looking forward to getting things going again (I've been going through game news withdrawal over the past few weeks) and hope that the gaming community will come along for the ride!

Great to see this. Making the list independant and international might make this a one-stop news site.
Great to hear back from you, Rick.

Hi Rick,
I had registered the domain gonecardboard.com to use for an online database I was working on to try to pick up where you left off. But, since you're back, let me know if you would like the domain and I will transfer it to you.

Many thanks, Rick; this more than dispels the sadness of your last big announcement. Maybe you should give us bad news more often and see if a trend develops.

Good news indeed but I'm just wondering--wouldn't it be easier (and cheaper) just to go back to Gamefest?

Thanks for your support!
In answer to some questions...
Bert - Yes I do intend to have RSS feeds. Marc - I'd like to use the gonecardboard domain, I'll write to you about this. Lou - There were a number of reasons why I left Gamefest and I think I'll better be able to serve the gaming community with a new website (though it may not be easier or cheaper). Patrick - I indend to support PaypPal.

You know, this is great news.
I had the domain name "gonecardboard.com" in my queue to register right after you quit Gamewire.
However my morals and better judgement kicked in and I cancelled the order for that domain. I absolutely detest domain squatting.
I see someone has now registered it, and I hope that was you folks and not a squatter. If I had grabbed it, I would have transferred it for free.
