I'm interested to see if anyone has done some DIY on their board games. This could be replacing parts, making your own inserts or components etc.

I just received these plastic euro coins in the mail to replace the crappy paper money in Power Grid. They sound and feel like real metal! http://imgur.com/4zUpd.jpg

If anyone is interested, I got them online from a shop called Little Linguist.

With the number of expansions for Carcassonne I decided to make my own insert so that I could keep all the tiles easily accessed but separate. My initial idea came from seeing what someone else had done and I simply folded cardboard to provide specific gaps. With incisions for the dividers.
Since taking the photo I've labelled the cross bars with the expansion that is stored there and coloured the edges of the tiles for the two expansions that don't have icons on them.

Nice job! I just find it crazy that publishers don't think ahead and actually create inserts that can fit all of the game pieces, especially when it comes to fitting sleeved cards back into the box!

I customized my O Zoo le Mio. The game has these little cardboard "huts" that you are supposed to hide your money tokens behind. Unfortunately, they are too small, and keep falling over. So, I cut the name plates off the huts, glued them onto some Altoids tins, then spray painted and clear coated them. There are also 4 little flags that indicate the order for any needed tie-breakers. I thought I had lost one, so I found 4 4-sided dice that matched the flag colors.

I wish I had pictures, but I don't have a digital camera.

Yeah, he's an award winning minis painter, by memory.

The best one I've seen (not by Russell) is this version of 30+ year old classic Dune:

I'm a big fan of pimping out my games. I even have the microbadge to prove it: mb!

I think there are very few of my games that are not modified or supplemented in some small way - mostly using the work of the very talented people around here on the 'Geek. All I normally do is the cutting out and gluing together.

That's my Alvin & Dexter up there ^^^, beautifully painted by Russell!

I use a lot of Tuckboxes for cards and tiles (found around here on the files section of the relevant game pages).

For Power Grid, I use casino chips to replace the paper money. Stickers were from the files section here, the holder is my own work.

Some of my own work is this insert to hold all 5 of the Alhambra expansions in the base game box (anniversary edition, not the original smaller box):

And I use a lot of plastic containers for bit storage too. Here is my modified TTR box that fits Europe, the 1912 expansion, Nordic and Alvin & Dexter in the one box.

Back when the only game I knew was Catan I went* a bit expansion-crazy arrrh, and built a box to store it all:

*never really recovered

I also replaced the crappy cardboard coins with real coins:

But the thing I'm most proud of (to date) is this Dominion play mat / storage box (it holds everything except the kingdom cards)*:

*until Dark Ages came out - currently planning Version 2.0!

It's not ground-breaking or amazing...

We use film can's to keep all the number pips from Catan in alphabetical order (normal pips get one film can, and the 5-6 player expansion pips get another film can).

Man, Jason. You're a machine! Makes my efforts look pitiful, haha. I really would like to make a proper insert for Power Grid. I tried making one with a hot glue gun and foam core, but it just came out looking cruddy.

There is some amazing stuff so far in this thread. Unfortunately, I think I am doing well if I manage to sleeve the occasional set of cards.

Thanks, but like I said - most of what I have done is simply cutting and gluing the hard work of much cleverer people! Definitely look around the files section of the game pages for things like tuckboxes and player aids.

I just tried to make a tuckbox for Power Grid, and failed miserably. Back to the drawing board.

I love the idea of opening a box and having all the basic cards laid out ready to go...

I'd prolly buy that if someone kickstarted it... (especially if it had some sort of clever modular system to house all the cards for all the expansions...)

Will be easier once the expansions have slowed down... I've totally blown out my custom box now that Dark Ages has arrived, but then it wasn't really working since Hinterlands really.

The next one (Guilds) is scheduled to be the last - out around March next year.

Hi Jason. It must be some thing about labrats creating cases.

This is a case for The Settlers of Catan and its expansions I made last year.

Inside are removeable trays to hold all the pieces, including individaul trays for the different players pieces.

I also made a few card holders.
The wood is a local native called Rimu.
I will upload the vector image for the logo incase anyone else wants it for laser engraving.

I am finishing a similar case for Carcassonne (just needing to do the logo), and also a case for Mahjongg.

wow Wow! That looks amazing. And much lighter looking than my behemoth. Mine was an early effort, and weighs about 8 kilos when full! One reason why I decided to not try and put all the Dominion cards in one box when I started on that one.

How did you get the laser engraving done?

Emblems NZ. But you need a vectorised pdf. My wife is the graphic design guru who knows these things.
I do like your Dominion case.

Tuck box success! I hated the designs that were on BGG so I just made my own one. Still nothing compared to that amazing Catan box!

This is where a modular system would be good. A new layer to the "box" for each expansion... Then you just buy the ones you need...
