My wife and I are offering painting commission services for your miniatures !

Last summer, my wife and I started painting War of the Ring. Taking our time it took us 5 months to go through it. A year later we began painting the first expansion, and took the opportunity to make some changes to the base minis.
We changed the base colors to match the frontiers one (for some reason we didn't do it in a first place) ; which implied minor changes on the painting of the mini itself to keep the harmony.
Then we thought, "wouldn't it be lovely to put foliage on everyone ?"

And then, "let's write the names of the heroes on their bases". And again "hey, let's do it in sindarin !"

3 months later, that would be today, it's finally done Including 2 days of research to understand sindarin, identify which form we should use, and track, when possible, the sindarin name of everyone. Cause you see, there is a sindarin to write sindarin names, and another way to write it if you want to write in sindarin... something that isn't sindarin ! Tolkien described this form as "a sindarin that could produce a man from Gondor". So, when all was understood, we were ready to go.

Gimli is entitled to an exception ; his name is written in dwarf. Well, shall I say, in Angerthas Erebor, that you might call "Angerthas of Moria". Dang this is complicated !

The "King's letter", longest sindarin text Tolkien wrote, usually meant to be an epilog of LOTR, was a handy ressource. All the hobbits are named in it, in sindarin, by Aragorn.

Strider is a home conversion.

When Lords of Middle Earth came, I was almost sad to see there would be a Strider mini, making mine usuless. But then I saw the miniature and thought I'd rather not use it, consider its sillyness ^^ Well, don't get me wrong, part of the charm of the game are the minis, that, while not being the best, are dear to my heart. I adore the game and do not mean in any way to depreciate Ares Game sculptors/work, but I couldn't resist :

Galadriel looks so happy. She's the only one not physically wearing her Ring : but her fusionned fingers did not helped

Mithrandir, custom Gandalf "Keeper of Narnya" for Lords of Middle Earth expansion, and the White Rider. Well, ok, I admit, the sindarin says "Bearer of Nenya" and not "Keeper".

Instead of using the regular officers provided in Battle of the Third age for Theoden & co, we made little conversions. At this point, you know you've done too much sindarin when you forgot which is Theodred and which is Eomer, and then you realise you can read it. And also when looking at the picture you notice a tehta is misplaced and shall be under the previous tengwa. And also when you know what are tengwar & tehtar

Conversion for Imrahil & Faramir. Imrahil model is its illustration from the Middle Earth Collectible Card Games, for those who knew that great game !

This Witch King is "Lord of Morgul", while the one on the next picture is "Lord of the Nazgul". Sindarin for "Lord" isn't the same when you refer to a "country lord", or a lord in the "master" meaning". The sindarin for "Nazgul" is unknown, BUT, in the LOTR movies, they deduced it shall be "Ulaer" considering its Quenya form... well well, good enough for us.

PVA glue and drops of superglue make nice ugly bases.

I had a hard time with my Balrog, that I hated when finished, so did it all over again, and stil hate it (on the right). Good fortune brang a new one with Lords of Middle Earth so the wife could do a better one !

Ents and their greenstuff mushrooms. And leaves. Glued one by one.

They even got little rocks for reloading.

All archers got provided with a bowstring when possible.

Gondor

Dwarves

Those ones won arrows too.

Rohan

Extra Rohirrim from Battle of the Third Age

Uruk-Hai

Uruk from the Battles.

Wargs

Nazguls

Orcs

Trolls

Oliphaunts

Southrons

Southron cavalry

Dunlendings

Corsairs of Umbar

Half Orcs

Siege Towers

To play with all those little fellows, a custom bigger map :

And then in the end, the critical question... how the hell are we gonna stock those without compromising the paint ?

I'll cut the steel sheet so they fit in the box game, but one thing is sure, those little magnets are strong ! No more making all the minis fall, CAT ! YOU HEAR ME CAT ?

Next step, the Gollum figure that a very, very kind BGG user sent us when he saw we were looking for one. And then, the sickdave fortresses !
I don't know if we'll se the end of it... and I don't know if I want to !

On a sidenote, if someone is interested, we'd be willing to do the same thing as a commission. We have some regrets for our version, like the fact that we did not boiled the minis of the base game before painting (so some are really bended), and we thought too late that we could make some conversions to the units, like changing their position a little so the armies would not have only identical units.
We also learned a few tricks between the base game and the expansion (we had other projects between), and it was a little sad to be forced to paint "as before" when we were doing the same minis : for example we couldn't paint the Rohirrim from Battles of the Third Age differently from the base game, even if now we would not paint them the same way. You can spot the difference if you compare the horses of the Rohirrim and the ones from the Southron cavalry.
Well, all this to say if commission there was, there's room to make this game look really cool ^^

Alright, everyone can stop painting their WotR minis now. It's over. The definitive version has been done....

I'm interested in the bigger map - how did you get the artwork scanned and printed, does it still fold up, and what did it cost?

There was that dude in a french forum who wanted a bigger map. He had an infographist bro who scanned the map in high resolution and put the pieces together on his computer. Now he looked for ways to print, found out plastic tarpaulin was cheap enough, and thought to himself the only real cost was POSTING. So he asked around in the forum if others might be interested. He ended up ordering for more than 2000$ of maps
In the end the map itself cost merely 20$, BUT I shall say it's not really conveniant. You can't fold it up (only round it like a carpet) and the material makes the print a little blury. It's quite pretty on the other hand, and very handy for Osgiliath. Man, there's never enough place there !

NOW I've seen this other dude who made another map for himself, printed on silk like casino tables. Like the Dreadfleet board I assume. He assures me the quality is perfect, and, of course, you can put it back in the box easily. It cost him 80€. He promised me pictures of his map next time he plays, I'll share them with you if you're interested.
As for the scan, I don't have it, but I can ask it for you if you like - however it will be in french !

Absolutely stunning work! thumbsup

Could you point out, how you did the strings on the bows? You mentioned pliers and super-glue, but I can imagine that is really hard to get the right amount of tension (to get the string straight) on this rather flexible miniatures. I imagine you did something like gluing the threat to the bottom, creating tension and then gluing the top and cutting the wire?

You got it right !

Small wire, glue on the bottom of the bow, gluing the bottom, glue on the up tip of the bow, tensing the wire, gluing, cutting.

It's not as much "tensed" than "vaguely straight".

Thanks for explanation. I think this is easier said then done

One last question:
Did you do this as a last step, i.e. after varnishing the miniatures?

I absolutely love how the strings on the bows add so much realism and theme. As Uthoroc pointed out in a image comment, it's absolute madness, but everyone who is painting this beast is already pretty mad, so why don't we just take the path to full insanity devil

I plan on painting my WOTR and I'll certainly give this technique a shot. Again thanks for this great inspiration! thumbsup

You're very welcome !

We did it before varnishing, it's not a problem at all.

You'll manage just fine, maybe the first couple are tricky but then you got the hand on it ^^

Actually the most boring part is when you apply too much glue and it makes for white stains. You'll probably re-paint a few bows after putting the strings !
