If a German unit is defending within 2 hexes of allied units on a road.

IE receiving the terrian bonus from air recon attacks.

Is it valid, for the allied player to move his piece away, in order to deny the German unit the benefit of the terrain bonus from armed recon attacks.

The example in my game is that I had a unit in bocage on a road, at a bridge, adjacent to an advancing allied unit. The allied player withdrew his unit three hexes down the road so that he could later armed recon attack the unit later on without penalty.

This seems an abuse of the rules. The Germans wouldn't simply leave the countryside and line up on the road JUST because the allied unit retreated a few hexes.

Can anyone explain this?

Our game group was also puzzled by the short range of what is considered "front line". It seems even contradictory with artillery units minimal range that is often more than 2 hexes !!

Yes this seems gamey to me. However it also is an opportunity for the German to advance, thus making the American attack to retake the ground.

Concentrated armed recon attacks were not as often conducted in close proximity to friendly forces, so keeping those attacks away from them is perfectly valid.

Armed Recon is conducted after German movement as well, so it is really more important what the German player does.

Ok, so the terrian penalty is more about the aircraft needing to aviod hitting frendly forces than whether the germans are on the road. Good to know.

If this is the case though, why then is there a penalty for being off road?

Perhaps what the game needs is a "dug in" configuration that allows units to claim the pervailing terrian bonus. Maybe it could grant a general drm -1 to enemy attacks in general. It could be represented by the "top" position of the chit. North facing for "dug in". South facing for moved. After a certain amount of time being stationary. A moved chit could be turned to make it dug in.

That might clear up the air attacks issue and add an additional dynamic to the game.
