Why? Some of the coolest buildings in the world are Cathedrals. You don't have to be religious to go to one.

This is how board games are. Last person to get sick starts Pandemic. Last person to visit Puerto Rico starts Puerto Rico.

So don't bother buying the game until you've been there (or know for sure that someone in your group has).

Yeah, vampires and other creatures of the night are handicapped in that way when determining start player. Sucks.

And the cool thing about board games is you don't always have to follow the rules ... which is why I include a set of dice in every game. High Roll is usually the fairest way for us to pick.

I appreciate the ones that are goofy enough to really mean "choose 1st player however you want". It's the ones that say "youngest" (or oldest) goes first that I don't like as I play with the same people and am in the middle age-wise. That's not going to change, and an age requirement sounds like the designer actually might have meant it - at least enough so that people who benefit from it (every time!) can make a decent argument.

Do people actually do this?

I've always considered these jokes, you get a good chuckle at how silly some of them are, then decide first player through a random method.

I've always just treated them as jokes too. I think it's a total waste when a game tells you to determine a starting player randomly or gives elaborate rules for how to randomly roll it off. Have fun with it! When I'm introducing a game without a funny start player rule to folks and someone asks who the rules say should go first, I say something thematic but improbably or impossible such as "the person who last toppled an empire". Sometimes they will look at me as if to say "reeeeally?" and then I'll just tell them anyone can go first and it doesn't matter.

As an American I was confused by this at first too. After visiting Europe, however, I realized that there are cathedrals EVERYWHERE there. Seriously, it seems like every city has at least one. So I think this rule makes more sense for Europeans.

Assuming that wasn't intended as a joke; that's pretty much the case in the UK due to:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/City_status_in_the_United_Kingd...
Quote:
This association between having a cathedral and being called a city was established in the early 1540s when King Henry VIII founded dioceses (each having a cathedral in the see city) in six English towns and also granted them city status by issuing letters patent.

Whilst I also tend to ignore these, isn't this rule ambiguously worded anyway?

The OP might reasonably argue that he is the last person to visit a cathedral.
(assuming he has never visited one)

I picked up a 'First Player die' at a con I went to once (can't even remember which con) from a dice specialist.

It has the usual 6 faces

Game Owner
Oldest
Youngest
Alphabetical
Whoever rolled the die
and an arrow

It's fun, but it's a long way off random...
e.g. Adam, the game owner, is also the oldest and rolls the die has
4 1/n out of 6 to go first.
