The implied qualification is that it must be a commercial copy.

I live in Vegas, which is not exactly a small town. We even have a section of town with tons of Asian shops. Not one Go board in the whole city. I did purchase a 19x19 travel version for $8.99 from YMImports.com that would fit easily in a carry-on or backpack. The tiny set came with the standard 361 magnetic stones.

Define need
Define immediately
Define what makes a set of pieces a commercial set

Open yellow pages, start calling hobby & game stores, ask for a Go set, depending on your definition - ask for a copy of Pente.

Drawing a 19x19 grid pennies-vs-dimes works well enough.

Wait, it's not really a full set you're looking for, it is a printed rulebook so that your opponent doesn't keep saying "you just made up that rule"; there I really can't help you, the book that came with my board wasn't very good.

Alternatively you can look for game clubs/ associations in the area (Google maps or again yellow pages) see if there's one in the area for Go, even if there isn't you may find a local that knows which shop has them.

(It occurred after hitting submit that it is intended to be a gift copy)

I go to the local Books a Million and find a copy of "How to play Go" by Janice Kim. In the back, I find the cardboard Go stones and graph paper Goban included with the book.

"Commercially Available" Goban purchased.

I utilize city blocks as the board and people as pieces.
To get them to be willing to stand in intersections I trick them by announcing it's a "flash mob like that wedding dance video".

It's a strange town indeed if immediately procuring a Go set is even an option.

For the vast majority of strange towns, especially in the west, you head for the internet and marvel in the wonders of overnight shipping.

Many good game stores I have visited sell go equipment.

Of course even more (mediocre) game stores I have visited do not.

But I would certainly check the local game stores, since it seems a reasonable chance.

Lots of malls have chinese import stores that usually have stones (that come with a plastic mat for a playing surface) or better quality sets.

But especially in the west, James, immediately means instant gratification. Overnight is not an option!

My question is more one of simple curiosity as to the local availability of a Go set than any actual need. Is it safe to assume that no one will be chiming in with, "Just head over to Walmart -- they have some next to the new and even more creepy Furbys"?

Time Machine in Manchester CT always has a couple sets to choose from, open every day standard daytime hours. That's where I would go if desperate to buy a Go set immediately, which wouldn't happen as I live here and always have a set at hand to play.

Suddenly a shot rang out! A door slammed. The maid screamed. Suddenly a pirate ship appeared on the horizon! While millions of people were starving, the king lived in luxury. Meanwhile, on a small farm in Kansas, a boy was growing up.

From you of all people?

I head to the craft store, buy a bag of black and white glass globules, and some sort of checkered fabric or a ruled quilting template for the board.

Edit: Even better, there are posterboards now that have gridded cutting guides printed on one side. I buy a sufficiently large one and a pair of scissors.

Bigger book stores seem a good bet.

I can't believe I didn't think of this as an option.

Check the BGG Marketplace for users trading or selling Go sets in your area.

From you of all people?

I was wondering that as well, and particularly remembered this famous Connect Four board:

Clearly it is.
And I fully support you in this investigation.

Ha! My question was merely hypothetical. Can I take it that no big-box national chain in the US stocks Go sets?

Out of curiosity I just searched at the website of a couple of national big-box chains (hint: one's logo has red circles and the other's logo has faux Cyrillic) and found go sets, but with the note "not carried in stores"!

1st: Barnes & Noble has inexpensive sets. Check there first.
2nd: I would use my Cell and google search for it locally at a game store.
3rd: Play Chess. Every Starbucks has a chess set, and I'd love me a quad espresso!

cool
