Well here goes, my first review on the geek.
Escape in a nutshell is 10 minutes of family frantic dice rolling fun.
Based thematically around Indian Jones and Raiders of the Lost Ark, you are an explorer working through a labyrinth of tunnels, collecting gems as you go. The more gems you collect, the easier it will be to leave the labyrinth once you discover the exit.
The dice are your tools, providing you the following
- a running man which allows you to discovers new tunnels
- a key used to unlock treasure
- a fire used to unlock gems
- a black mask which locks the dice out from being used
- a golden mask which unlocks 2 black masks
As a co-operative game, it works better with 4 players, as invariable from the start you split into the two directions available, in order to maximise the chance of discovering the exit. If there are two of you, it will then be down to the luck of the dice, that you don't get locked out.
As a 4 player player game, you can work in teams of two. As a team, when one of you has the bad luck to get all your dice locked out, your team-mate is able to help you out, as anyone in the same room as you, can share in dice rolls. In that way, working together also helps when collecting gems.
There is a starting tile with two exits. To discover an exit, you need to roll 2 running men to reveal the tile. At this point, any curses are activated and treasure revealed.

- loose a dice if it falls of the table
- locked in the room
- gold masks only remove 1 black mask
Each curse requiring a combination of tools to remove as displayed on the curse card.
Any treasure in the room is unlocked with 2 keys.
Gems are what makes the adventure scalable, the more explorers there are, the more gems appear in the gems chamber. You will need to roll the same number of keys as there gems in order to exit from the temple (once you discover the exit tile).
Gems are removed from the gem chamber by discovering additionally gems throughout the labyrinth of tunnels. However, I think more than 4 people working in a confined space, introduces new limitations. Even with 4 people, there were times when we were in each other's way. Again, this is all part of the fun.
On top of all this, at pre-defined timed intervals, a gong will sound and all the adventurers get to meet up at the start tile, hopefully to catch up on their success and plan their next move. If you fail to reach the centre before the times up, you loose a dice permanently.
Does this game have longevity, I think yes, as long as you play it for what it is, a filler game. The randomness of the tiles and dice rolls should provide enough freshness for it not to feel stale. The curses and treasure tiles add humour.
We introduced the game last night to my wife's parents. A quick demonstration of a 10 minutes game being played, initially put them off. They are both in their 70's and the frantic dice, made it a appear more of a dexterity exercise. However, we put together the simple rules which excludes the cursed & treasure tiles and off we went.
