When a mission is flipped with XP as a part of its goal do i have to:
1. Show characters with that many XP on my bridge
2. Show that many unspent XP
3. Spend those XP

Which of these please?

Number 1. The xp has to be on the bridge, but it is not spent.

You mean number 2 than? I have to have the unspent amount of the XP at disposal at the moment i am going for the Goal? The number 1 means even the XP characters whose XP was spent already (assuming that playing an XP character gives you the printed amount of imaginary XP tokens you can spend ). Which is probably not what the Goal asks for.

The question should actually go like: "Do i need to show XP characters or the unspent XP 'tokens'?"

I believe that you are allowed to play Characters from your hand in response to a flipped mission.

So, you'd flip it, and if you didn't have enough experience on your bridge, you'd have to play enough characters to your bridge to cover the XP cost.

And that XP remains 'unspent' in terms of buying from Starbase; you can complete the mission and then still use those Character's XP to buy new stuff.

I think that's how it goes, anyway.

It can be spend or unspent. It just has to be present on cards in your bridge.
