(currently adjusting the layout of this post...thanks)

Goal: to create a Forbidden Island thread that contains information about all (or most) available variants.
- Island Tile Layouts
- Island Roles
- the Traitor deck
- the Treasure Power deck
- the Challenge deck
- the Chance deck
- Vanishing Treasures (a dice variant)

Are there other variants that people have played and find to be awesome? Please PM me and I can look at including them here. Thanks

Island Tile Layouts -- wrote:

This is a listing of Island Layouts that consists of both original layouts and fan-made layouts. Sometime ago a discussion was started within BGG boards regarding alternate layouts.

This discussion has continued as of late HERE.

David has redesigned the 25 layouts with a new card back. He has also included a 5 point difficulty rating scale.

This is a link to David's shared ArtsCow deck with the updated art. Please note it contains the other variants as well.

NOTE: The Island Tile Layout deck includes 1 layout from the base game, 10 layouts that were released by the European publisher, 14 fan made layouts.

Island Roles -- wrote:

The original discussion began around creating 10 new roles for Forbidden Island. This Conversataion resulted in the creation of a total of 18 new roles for added variety.

Corey originally designed the Forbidden Island Roles based in part on the forums.
Pictured are the 24 roles (6 original + 18 new).

These are examples the new roles closeup and the optional card back.

Corey created the first deck on ArtsCow.com of Forbidden Island Roles. (note this is the shared Album link)

Note: If you use the same card back, it will allow for roles to remain secret when dealing them out. This is important if you plan to play with the Traitor Variant.

The Traitor Deck -- wrote:

Consists of traitor deck cards, and one traitor (this role is included in the 18 roles above). The idea of the Traitor variant...one of your island mates might be a traitor...he wants to take all the treasure for himself and leave you behind to sink.

Here are Corey's Traitor Deck cards.

Corey created the first deck on ArtsCow.com of The Traitor Deck. (note this is the shared Album link)

Treasure Power Deck -- wrote:

When someone collects a treasure, that person is granted a one time use special power. The Treasure Power thread discusses this variant in more detail.

The Treasure Power cards as designed by Corey.

The Challenge Deck -- wrote:

This is a way to alter game play. Choosing a card from the Challenge deck effects the whole game. Also known as "Special Events" cards.

VTHodge wrote:
The first incarnation of the challenge cards are displayed on this bottom of this deck (scroll down). I cannot find them displayed anywhere else. I have been trying to get the shared album link to have access to these challenge cards.
Here is the Artscow link but it is not share-able.

David has redesigned the Challenge deck (and Chance cards).
Viewable here, the 10 top cards pictured.

Note when "Chance Circumstance" is drawn, the all chance cards are mixed into the Treasure deck.

The Chance Deck -- wrote:

When the challenge card turns up...mix the Chance cards into the treasure deck, each card would have a good or bad effect on the player or game.

The conversation about the Chance cards occurred through a number of threads and includes some early challenge versions, so to place a single link would be very difficult.

Vanishing Treasures --(a dice variant) wrote:

Here is the pitch:
The treasures on the Forbidden Island are mysteriously disappearing. One moment you think you have it in hand and the next you realize it has disappeared.
As you reach for the treasure, you roll a dice. An even roll means you collect the item but an odd roll causes the treasure to move to its sister site on the island.

Available Deck Printer/Services -- wrote:

ArtsCow
- creates decks limited to 54 cards.
- can customize front and back independently.
- BGGers have suggesting waiting to place orders until there is a coupon available due to high shipping costs.

The Game Crafter
- create decks of variable size.
- can customize front and back independently.

Printer Studio
- can pick a larger deck size, from 54 to 234.
- can customize front and back independently.

FYI, posting the shared album link for ArtsCow allows people mix and match cards easily. Also when creating a deck there are 2 card options:
1. "playing cards 54 designs" allows to different faces but all the same card back.
2. "Multipurpose cards" allows for differing card front and back designs, but costs a little more.

Hann, this is a great summary of everything! OMG we needed this because the Forbidden Island discussions, download link, and various BGG posts related to it are so convoluted! Great job dude!

Now, to include a simple, solid list of eat artscow link with each of the decks... also, someone needs to make a standardized rules-sheet to go along with all the cards, one that looks like the original game instruction manual and takes the final evolved ideas from each of the 4 main discussion threads (traitor, treasure power, island layout, and challenge cards)...

Desi,
The special events have been incorporated in with the Challenge and Chance cards mentioned above. Thanks for pointing that out though...I will adjust the verbiage to include these terms.

yeah...unfortunately you cannot get the files from artscow...

but you can print the image files from bgg (it everything is working now).

but it might be easier to geekmail the different creators and maybe they can just send the images to you. I have included the creators above as well.

hope that helps.

How does Strategist work? Do you take a second full turn, including drawing both Treasure and Flood cards? That's how we were playing and we found it almost inconvenient.

(This is the newer named Strategist, that reads "If you have 3 or less cards in your hand at the end of your turn, you may take a second turn.")
