Let me start with a little background. I used to really enjoy board games, ie. Cosmic Encounter, Civ, Advanced Civ. But then my gaming friends moved away. I got married, had kids, and somehow forgot about gaming. Recently my wife purchased Heroscape for my nephew. After checking out the box I decided I needed to get some for my 7 year old for Christmas...yeah thats the ticket, it's really for him.

Needless to say my 7 year old now has 3 master sets and about a dozen expansions. He's shown a little interest, but not enough to draw him from his console gaming. Meanwhile, while researching Heroscape I found the Geek. Things haven't been the same since.

I've since purchased Blokus, Carcasonne, Carcasonne the City, Citadels, Duel of Ages (1 & 2), 3 Dungeoneer decks, Hera and Zeus, the aforementioned Heroscape and expansions, Lost Cities, Pirate's Cove, Plunder, Poison, Puerto Rico, Ra, Razzia!, and Tikal. All based upon reviews here.

My wife hasn't shown as great enthusiasm as I have for my new hobby. But she has enjoyed a couple sessions of Lost Cities. So I've decided to throw a gaming party on January 28th. I've invited everyone I can think of. I've ordered Apples to Apples Crate, Loot, and Bang w/expansions. I figure we'll start with Apples to Apples, then move on to a Pirate theme with Pirate's Cove, Plunder, and Loot. I've even ordered the Pirates of the Carribean soundtrack for mood music. After the Pirate games we'll see where it goes, hopefully I'll hook at least a couple people.

Problem is, now I have to wait....and wait....and wait.

Good luck! I hope it goes over well. I am so lucky my boyfriend, brothers, parents, friends... all enjoy boardgaming. I never lack someone to play with. I know everyone isn't so lucky so I hope you "hook" some on your special night! Sounds like fun.

Yes, good luck.

If you want advice, know well the rules of whatever you play, and be able to explain them quickly without referring to the rulebooks. People usually hate long rules explanations.

Nice start for your new hobby (obsession???) .

The first game party can be hard. And especially if you're not sure what type of gamers you have (ior if they'll play at all).

THe advice about knowing the rules is really important. Apples to Apples (good idea for an icebreaker) may not be difficult, but the other games can be for newer gamers. If you know your stuff, the games will flow much smoother .

If you have 7 or more people you might want to lay a game of werewolf, it looks very fun for large groups, easy to learn also and free! Have fun

My advice: watch out for Bang! Sure, it's a great game that plays up to 8 people (w/ Expansion), but it's not a lightweight party game. There is next to no text on the cards, so the first game will be slow progress. Don't introduce the expansions until your group has the base game figured out.

But do play it...eventually. Just not now, with a bunch of non-gamers.

Thanks, I appreciate it, I'm really looking forward to getting into this, now I just need to convince others.

Good idea, I'll study the rules on every game I think we might play.

My wife has already said that I have to stop buying games till I find people to play with. She just increased the incentive to find others.

I'll have to check it out too then.

This is too bad, it sounds like great fun. But I'll take your advice, I have to hook 'em.

I'll check my schedule when I get back in town and see what I can do. I'm on the road this week in Michigan. I did bring Citadels and talked a co-worker into trying it last night. We played 2 games and had fun, we're going to play again tonight now that we know the rules.

Had great fun this week playing 2 player Citadels, as described here, http://www.boardgamegeek.com/article/770213#770213]. Looking forward to trying it with more players.

I listened to the Dice Tower on backpack games this evening in the hotel. Tom and Joe were raving about Bang, and it reallyl made me want to try it even more. Are you sure it's not a game to try introducing new players to?

Thanks,
Jon

Citadels is a lot of fun, especially when you begin adding more people. Duneoneer is great to play on a table by a fire in the summer. I would never turn down an opportunity to play Tikal. And Carcasonne remains one of my favorite games, losing only to a few others like Settlers of Catan.

Heroscape was also responsible for getting me into gaming. A friend (bob_the_goon) had received it for Christmas and we played it a few times, which prompted me to go pick up The Settlers of Catan, a game I had not played in over a year. After playing that for a few weeks he began to purchase more and more and more...

Remember to have plenty of snacks for your get together. And be prepared with a variety of games depending on what your guests express interest in.

This is a good suggestion for Werewolf. There is also a "free" version by the name of Mafia in which all you need handy is a deck of playing cards. Looney Labs makes a nice cheap but well made version by the name of "Are You a Werewolf" too. If you need any help with this just send me a PM and I can jot down the rules real fast and send um to ya. Definite hit at all the parties I have played it at.

I would also watch out for Bang, I don’t think I would ever use it to introduce people to gaming.

Suggestions that I can give would be Through the Desert, and Ticket to Ride.

Through the Desert is a great game with little plastic pastel camels (about all you have to do is set it out and someone will ask about it) quick involves strategy and is fun for those who are into those types or games. caravan

Then Ticket to Ride is a great game for mostly all ages; adults and children alike. It’s easy to play yet fun and strategic at the same time. It includes great bits and the colorful box is sure to get an eyeballing from someone.bluetrain

Knowing the rules backwards and forwards is a great tip. The less you need to stop during the rules explanation to look up that one thing the better. I usually cheat, and skim the rules myself before doing my rules spiel.

Good luck to you and please let us know how the night turns out!

If you have any questions just ask!

I'll look into Werewolf and Mafia, thanks. I've started reviewing the rules for all the games I have and prepared a brief summary of each game. I've got less than a week now to prepare.

Unfortunately my wife has put a kabosh on buying new games until I prove that I'll find others to play with, so I'm stuck with what I have already, http://www.boardgamegeek.com/viewcollection.php3?username=Jo.... so free games are good choices.

Thanks again everybody. I need to make this work, how else will I feed my addiction.

Finally getting closer.

I've written a summary of all my games, along with links to the rules, which I've passed out. That way people can be a little prepared for the types of games, and hopefully pick some ahead of time.

I've printed players aids and FAQ's for all the games. I've either laminated them, or put them in full sheet protectors depending on how big they are.

I did download the new player guide just in case, http://files.boardgamegeek.com/viewfile.php3?fileid=6447 for Bang, shrunk it to 68% to get it to fit in the box, then laminated them. I marked it on my summary as more complex, we'll see how it goes.

We've ordered the food.

I think I'm almost ready!!!
