I'm curious to know what others think about the likelihood of a reprint for the BB edition of Glory To Rome? As someone who has followed the KS updates and learnt about the dire straits in which Cambridge Games has landed itself in, I do feel sympathetic, to some extent, regarding the company's financial plight right now.

While I do wish Ed and CG a quick financial recovery, I'm not very optimistic that the BB will see a second print run in the near future. What do you think? If such a scenario does materialise, then the price of the BB version will certainly skyrocket, more so than now. This consideration may motivate some who are on the fence about it to act sooner than later. I know I have regretted not purchasing games which became OOP and exorbitant by the time I seriously considered getting them.

To be sure, this post is simply meant to find out if others share my sentiments on the matter. No ill intentions meant here towards Ed or CG, nor do I have a copy for sale, as this is strictly an inquiry to the general consensus here regarding the topic at hand.

Thanks in advance to those who respond with your views!

Why not buy Uchronia? It's basically the same game, with a sillier theme.

I thought I read somewhere that the black box edition was going to be their new regular edition...
If that was true, then presumably it will be reprinted, considering Glory to Rome is their flagship game.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I'm personally drawn more to the theme and minimalist art of the Black Box, which I currently own. Perhaps some of those who have trouble purchasing the BB now or in the future may be somewhat inclined to check out Uchronia as suggested, especially if they appreciate the more wacky setting.

Right now Ed was on the verge of bankruptcy and lost his house. I believe he's back to working a contract position for his day job but it is unknown if a reprint will occur. I believe Ed has said he wants to do a reprint but wants to and finding the time/effort/money are a whole nother thing.

I wouldn't expect a reprint until 2015 at earliest and it certainly is possible it is never reprinted.

First off, it is worth getting. The game play is top-notch, and the production of the BB is great. I wish every game used that card stock.

I believe it will be reprinted. It is just too popular not to. Although, I suspect it will be awhile. This is based, in part, on what is going on. CGF can't respond to simple customer service requests, that doesn't instill a lot of confidence that a speedy reprint will happen. No sour grapes, just logic and my 2 cents.

Yup, that's what I read from Ed's updates, too. Just don't know if CG plans to reprint the Black Box via another KS campaign? If so, they may have an uphill task in regaining consumer confidence in the company to hit the required backing for a second print run.

Uchronia is NOT Glory To Rome, not by ANY means. Dig out ANY edition of GtR as it's awesome beyond words...and I wouldn't hold my breath for a BB reprint anytime soon; CGF have hemorrhaged all their key staff, no longer interact with GtR's designer and have generally showered the gaming community with excuses and tales of abject woe for years.

It's not been a good journey for anyone involved.

Almost exactly what I think, Charles. It's kinda sad that a well-meaning KS project to give the original GTR art a makeover has turned into such a mess for CG and a significant number of backers.

Oh. I'm sorry. I knew there were a few differences, but they're very similar, no?

What are the main differences, aside from dinosaurs? Should you own both?

Or is this a case of Brass/Age of Industry type deal?

Uchronia is a gutted game when compared to GtR. It isn't anywhere near as fun or as well put together. The entire time I played, all I could think of is how much is rather be playing GtR.

It's lighter, easier and the many changes, oh so many, just aren't for the better.

Uchronia was a big letdown at BGG con last year. It's really a dumbed down version of GtR.

Consider that Wake has left CGF, and Ed is just not good at running a game company. He shouldn't - but if he does - he will have to use what appears to be their only real success - GtR. So I suspect he will try again, and you'll see it reprinted some day.

I'm not sure what sucker would give this guy a business loan, or who in the world would back Ed again on KS. So I imagine he would likely use his own $$$ after getting his finances back on track? So that might be a long time coming.

But when he does.....buy it from a FLGS. Don't give Ed/CGF your money and hope for some future KS shipment, or whatever.

I love GtR, and my hope for it (and a reprint) would be if Ed comes to his senses and sells GtR to another game company and gets out of the business. Then this excellent game has a future....so maybe hope for that.

This echoes of Barticus' edgy suggestion:

Perhaps Ed can recover some of his funds by selling the rights of the game to another publisher, that is, if there aren't any legal issues arising from such a move, seeing that he isn't the sole designer of GTR.
As such, I share the sentiments of those who think that Ed should call it a day and pass on the torch to someone else who can better facilitate the continuity of the game's publication. However, I think it'll be hard for Ed to let go of Cambridge Games' most popular title, as he has invested so much in it.

I actually like the cartoony art in the end better than the BB that I got.

It's never been played, and for the right offer, I'd probably be willing to part with it and the KS bonuses.

This is likely to be the case -- both in terms of CGF reprinting the blackbox edition as the standard edition and in terms of doing it soon because it is CGF's flagship game. I'm not sure of the details, but I think the GtR reprint is likely to be relatively soon (E.g. 2014), seeing as it is a pretty stable investment, and thus a way for Ed to help build up capital for the company again.

Ed's personal bankruptsy is obviously not good for the pace of things, but it appears to be having less of an effect that I at first feared. He's still planning GtR reprint (first) and new games (second). In fact, there are some games that are already basically printed, but not quite ready to go out, so those will come pretty soon -- Montana, Pala, Quills.

That's all I know!

So did Ed manage to dodge formal backruptcy, or are you saying it hit him?

I'd happily buy it if Ed didn't kickstart a reprint.

IF he can either get a bank loan or get someone else reliable to do the bulk of the work and sold it in stores he'd probably be ok.

I'm not color blind, but I find the resource art difficult decipher. It looks the same unless under bright lights. Unless you mark up the cards, this is a deal breaker for play. However, it is shorter than GtR, but so are a lot of other better games.

While I prefer the IV edition to the BB, the european version has great looking art. THAT should be the standard version IMO.

If they do reprint the game, they really should improve the quality of the Black Box cards. I know people have said that they are casino quality, the best cards ever, fantastic, stupendous.....

I've got to say that after only a few plays the cards started to chip and rip. I ended up having to sleeve them. I can think of no other game in my collection where the cards are this thin and cheap. I've since gone back to the original, cartoony style cards - they are sturdier and the art is way more fun.
