Well, I can't seem to find my notes at the moment, so these are from memory. First, I played Otumba against Mike Willour. I was teaching Mike the system, and Otumba is a pretty good learning scenario if the newbie takes the Spanish. First of all, the clarifications from Cándido make a big difference for the Aztecs. When I played this before, I had been rolling twice to hit on ranged fire from archers, but not twice for results.
So I came out of the gates and started moving toward the middle of the map. The Aztecs had good luck with their ranged fire rolls and were seriously threatening both flanks of the Spanish army. Mike concentrated his forces in the center, in particular his cavalry. However, he didn't have much luck in shock combat to begin with, and the Aztec center held. The situation on the flanks continued to intensify, and for a time it looked like the Spanish were in danger of being enveloped!
However, Mike's luck began to slowly improve, and some overaggressiveness on my part allowed him to get a unit of herreruelos into position to attack Cuauahtémoc himself! This not only put the entire Aztec army in danger due to the potential for a 20 point morale loss and subsequent Spanish victory rolls, but the ZOCs exerted by this and the other two Spanish cavalry units disrupted much of the forces comprising my center.
Cuauahtémoc, with his high morale actually held out against repeated assaults for several turns, but Mike was able to turn the tide on the flanks with some good ranged fire rolls. I think I lost 10 or 15 morale points in a single turn on about turn 7. Mike eliminated several units and demoralized several more, and the latter had the odds stacked against them when it came to rallying, as the Aztec leader unit still had its hands full with the Spanish cavalry.
I resigned at this point. My best chance had been to break one of the Spanish flanks; when Mike broke through instead, I felt that the situation could not be salvaged. Still, this was the best Aztec performance yet.
