Mike Willour and I also played San Quintín on Friday or Saturday. I took the French, Mike the Imperials.
I had a lot of fun with SQ. I began by strongly attacking Mike's weak center along the road with some of the abundant French cavalry. This went well initially, but Mike responded with his own cavalry and things bogged down. I held my infantry in reserve, since I could not afford to lose many of them and still have enough SFs alive to satisfy the victory conditions.
With my center in disorder, I quickly moved up some more cavalry to cover the disordered and demoralized units from the initial attacks. I made some attacks on Mike's now strengthened center, but these were not succesful. I also tried to slip around his right flank, but I was repeatedly thwarted by an arquebusier unit here.
Mike was well aware of the need to kill off some of my infantry, and he managed to slip a high morale cavalry unit into my rear. The only units I had with which to offer resistance were a demoralized cavalry unit and a couple of low strength, low morale mangas. Luckily, one of the mangas scored a hit during the Sprinkling of Shot phase and demoralized the Imperial cavalry. I was also able to successfully rally the demoralized gendarmes, who were able to destroy the still demoralized Imperial cavalry on the next turn.
After rallying most of my cavalry in the center, I renewed my assault up the road to San Quintín. This time, I broke through, in part due to Mike having engaged many of his forces on my left flank in the meantime. However, this success was short lived, as Mike was able to bring up reserves and establish a screen in front of San Quintín to prevent me from getting through, and several attacks left me with disordered and demoralized units. I had to throw in the towel at this point. This was on turn 7 or 8, IIRC.
