Descent: Journeys in the Dark (Second Edition) » Variants » MiNKSLiNG's Custom Monster #2 - Basilisk

Author: minksling
Ok, here he is, #2 from my zoo of custom D:2e critters... the Basilisk.

(#1 - Chimera - is now available as a pdf in the files section)

As is common knowledge, the Basilisk has what many people will be crying into their Mountain Dew over, yes, that's right... the Death Stare.
No, the masses cry, you can't have a Death Stare, it's too OP!
I say Yes devil

See how she rears her head,
And rolls about her dreadful eyes,
To drive all virtue out, or look it dead!

- Jonathan Swift

1 x 2 in size, not the hardiest of beasts and not too quick on the trot... but a danger none the less. Toxic breath, a nasty bite and a gaze that's best not to meet.

Anyway, as with my previous critter, feel free anyone to put in your 2 cents .. all constructive comments appreciated

Bale Glance and Deathly Gaze changes...

I'm afraid that Deathly Gaze is extraordinarily OTT.

Additionally, I feel like giving the Basilisk Immobilize, Poison *and* a one-shot skill-test kill is perhaps too much. Maybe scratch the Poison?

Finally, the image that you are using here is far too adorable . I insist that you use something closer to this:

Ha ha... you should be afraid, very afraid.

Preventing the Basilisk being able to strike with the poison / immobilize in the same turn as being able to attempt his Gaze is how I'm keeping his OTTness down.

I may though alter the Bale Glance to drain 1 fatigue from target hero in LoS (possibly if failing a Willpower test) ... instead of the Immob. That'll reduce the conditions it can inflict.

Poison Breath is a Basilisk trait I'm fond of, so I'd like to retain that.

Granted your image is freakish beyond measure surprise... but, I think I'll keep the "cute but deadly" one I have sketched up

A couple of changes made...
Bale Glance now inflicts 1 fatigue (instead of Immobilizing)
and Deathly Gaze now gives the hero their choice of attribute to save against.

Most heroes should now be quite resilient towards DG, but the fear of death will still be there (albeit a much smaller one for most).

I'm considering having the hero take 1 point of damage if saving, considering it uses the whole Basilisk's turn, and the chance of success is so much less. Seems reasonable.

You're going to have to rephrase deathly gaze in case Basilisk is stunned. Or maybe they cannot use it if stunned?
Similar, if OL has used Unholy Ritual on this group beforehand, can they use the ability still?

The ONLY action you may perform on your turn, when stunned, is to remove the stun card/token.
Deathly Gaze would not be an option for the Basilisk, as an action would have already been spent (on freeing itself from the stun) ...and DG must have 1st action slot, if to be used.

Unholy Ritual is a different matter... DG would still be available to the Basilisk. Though his actions have been "reduced" by 1, he still has the one remaining, and that would be his first when used.
Even though Bazil was chanting away, he was still keeping his eyes peeled! googoo

I love the work that you're doing on the new monsters - I have only one request - is there any way you could make a paper miniature using the graphics as well - for those of us with limited miniature collections?

I believe that Igthorn is thinking of a standup image.
It is easily made.
I crafted the D1 monsters that way, using google'd images - which are not those of Descent 1, but who cares?

I realized that was likely what he meant, I just thought an origami basilisk (or other monster) would be cool. cool

Ha ha.. little folded paper basilisks would look pretty funky.
I've folded a fair bit of origami in my time and those multi-legged critters can get pretty fiddly.

I'd be happy to create a 2 x 1 token of Bazil, that could be laid flat on the board... or propped up in one of the 'door stands' or some such, if desired.
Sounds like a plan actually, I may just do that for each of the critters I'm working on.

I'll assemble things and get them up in the file section in the near future too.
