My GotW Thread: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/203864
I'm a long time gamer. I played standard american fare growing up, then some of the hobby games in the mid to late 70's. I spent a long time playing D&D, Champions and other RPGs in the late 70s to late 80's.
Then I took a break. College was over, I was away from all my buddies, I fell in love, had kids, bought a house. AD&D 3rd Edition came out.
I grabbed a few books for nostalgia's sake, found some players and started playing every other Friday. We did that for 3 years, and I got burned out. Its hard raising kids, working 40 or more, and running a D&D game. I wanted a hobby that didn't have so much overhead in time...
One day at a yard sale I saw Guillotine
for fifty cents. It had the WotC logo on it. Hmmmm...
It was fun, but a little light. Can't play that all night. Enter the dude at my FLGS. He hooked me up with Settlers, Carc, and a few card games. It was 2003. I found BGG in October. I stopped playing my D&D campaign in December.
BTW, i use the alternate BGG rating scale:
: Outstanding game. One of my all-time personal favorites.
: Excellent game. Always a pleasure to play. Shines under most circumstances.
: Very good game. Rarely disappoints me. High on my request/recommend list.
: Good game. Usually willing to play. I might even request or recommend it.
: OK game. Some fun or challenge at least. Enjoyable in the right circumstances.
: Average game. I'm indifferent, but may be willing to play.
: Below average game. I avoid playing and would need to be persuaded.
: Poor game. Will strongly resist playing.
: Very poor game. I refuse to play this.
: Dead game. Seriously negative entertainment value. Black Hole of Fun.
