Let’s see, let’s see…the only explanation I have is that gaming must be in my blood. I’ve always liked games – especially board games. I squandered my youth on Monopoly, Stratego, and Risk - much to my parent’s dismay (I never had the Candyland/Chutes and Ladders experience but was encouraged to play Original Memory). I played some Chess, Diplomacy, Third Reich, and D & D on a high school level. I did some undergraduate work in the Milton Bradley series (i.e. Axis and Allies, Fortress America, etc, etc.) with a minor in RPG’s. Afterwards, I embarked on a graduate degree in war games with a sequence in Epic 40k. Years later I found myself caught up in the mundane struggles of family, house, and career – with no locally convenient friends with which to game. I decided that in lieu of making new friends (it’s so hard to find ‘normal’ people to game with on Long Island) that it would be easier to make a whole new person. ‘Daughter’ was born a little over four years ago (SEP 2002) and her tutelage in the fine art of gaming is progressing nicely. There was only one flaw in my plan. Babies can’t read. Come to think of it, babies can’t do much of anything. So I waited – for two and a half years. And then we began. Thanks to a good gaming buddy (who lives too far away to make any sort of regular visits) he recommended some ‘first’ games that he’d found on a weird sort of ‘geek’ list. I tried them out – and some of my own ideas – and was thrilled at the result. It’s been a year and half since that first game of ‘Go Away Monster’ and we are up to 30 + games on the shelf. She can read numbers, counts to 100 (with a little help), knows all of her colors, recognizes some of her letters, and loves to play games with her daddy. Now she’s 4 years old and the horizon is getting wider. Thanks to the recommendations on BGG – I have recently placed several orders and raided a local specialty toy store.
And that’s where we are today.
